High school play next week

Toys for Tots fundraiser

The annual Whitehall High School fall play will have a very different venue in 2017.

The performance of "Over the River and Through the Woods" will take place Monday, November 20 and Tuesday, November 21 at the Star Theater in downtown Whitehall.

"Performing in the theater is a fantastic opportunity for these kids. It is a great space and such a learning experience for the students to work on a minimal set and minimal lighting," theater director Cheri Shaw said. "The closeness of the audience is great challenge for an actor/actress. It really stretches them and makes them better at their craft. We were practicing at the theater a few nights ago, and the atmosphere was incredible. Should be a couple of really fun evenings"

The two performances will be part of a joint fundraising effort with the theater for Toys for Tots. Admission is $5 or free with a sealed toy.

"When Colton Anderson (theater manager) approached me about the idea of the drama club performing at the theater I was stoked. I LOVE the idea of the drama club getting to help raise money for Toys for Tots. The community has been so supportive of the drama club. I feel like this is the perfect opportunity for us to give back. We are really grateful to Colton for including us," Shaw said.

The cast for the play written by Joe Dipierto includes Brandon Gipson as Frank, Garrison Shaw as Nick, Maggie Whitehurst as Aida, Karlie Wagner as Caitlin, Allee Scafani as Nunzio and Dorothy Mastel as Emma.

The stage crew includes Bailee Hess, Wyatt Powers, Dalaney Scafani, Beau Wagner and Katie Whitehurst.

"It is a heart warming comedy about family. Practices have been great. All of the students are in multiple activities so (as always) we are working around the sports schedules. These kids are hard workers and very dedicated. They are getting out of a sporting activity and hustling to drama practice most evenings of the week. I've been so thankful for supportive families," Shaw said.
