Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
I have this little bar at the bottom of my computer that helps you find information. So, I asked for the words to “God Bless America”, by Irving Berlin. Wow! I had a wonderful time listening to myriads of patriotic music and eventually found the first time Berlin’s song was introduced to America. It was 1938 and sung by Kate Smith. The opening words “As the storm clouds gather, far across the sea”, were very appropriate as Hitler was gaining power in Europe. However, I wondered, How many of us when we sing the chorus, realize that it is a prayer. Happy 4th of July! “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.”
The Indiana University Field Station’s vehicles aren’t as noticeable now as they were in past. The Field Station gets used for a variety of other classes besides Indiana U. Earlier this year a group from Hong Kong - 30, plus faculty - were here for five weeks to study geology. This isn’t the first year students from Hong Kong have used the Indiana U. campus south of Cardwell in the South Boulder. Bruce Douglas, Director, has been with this campus since 1986 as an instructor.
The U.S. Forest had students from all over the U.S.A. for training. Soon, Search and Rescue will be using the Field Station for training. Also, using the facility will be non-traditional students from a branch campus from Indianapolis, along with one faculty member. Diana Caldwell has been head cook for all of the groups and finds her work and service very interesting as she interacts with the variety of backgrounds and cultures. Diana has been with Indiana U. for 8 years.
When you are traveling from Cardwell into Whitehall, be sure to notice the eye-catching sign along the Interstate that advertises Frontier Days! It should attract lots of folks to spend that weekend in Whitehall.
Two groups of young adults, 3 to Christian Youth in Action, and 9 to Summit in Colorado, are home and putting their training into practice. The CYIA graduates are teaching 5-Day Clubs (they are like a mini Vacation Bible School), in a variety of areas. The Summit students feel like that have been in college for two weeks learning the Christian Worldview in every area of life. New friends are made in the process.
After much hassle, Janice Carmody made it to Smithers B.C. for the graduation of James Fallows. James if the youngest son of Norm and Jeanien (Carmody) Fallows. J.J. Carmody and her daughter Piper Vant, accompanied Janice to Canada. Even with all of the delays, etc., family time is always special.
Last week in the Ledger there was an announcement of Dr. Katie Dawson becoming part of a team in the Anaconda Hospital. Katie is a 1998 graduate of Whitehall High School, took her undergraduate studies at M.S.U., Bozeman, received her M.D. from the University of Washington in Seattle and did her residency at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. She is a very experienced surgeon having practiced at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage for the past 6 years. The daughter of Anne Marie Carey and the late Dave Dawson, she is so glad to be ‘home’.
Can it be? An airplane perhaps spraying for mosquitoes? Wouldn’t that be wonderful??
