Lewis and Clark Caverns hosting recruitment event

A volunteer recruitment day is being planned for next week at the Lewis and Clark Caverns.

Montana State Parks announced that it is holding a volunteer recruitment day Sunday March 19 from 1 to 3 p.m.

There will also be a a gathering to view some historical memorabilia from the beginning days of the park to present day. In addition to the history display, a guided tour will be led by Ken Soderberg to discuss some of the park’s notable CCC contributions.

This event is to attract people from the surrounding area to the park to discuss upcoming volunteer opportunities this Spring and Summer at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park. Caverns officials are looking for long term volunteers to assist at the front desk the main visitors center, and to be cave sweeps on our Wild Cave tours. In addition to these long-term positions, they would like to create a list of the people who would be interested in receiving news about other short term volunteer opportunities as they arise.

Guests are asked to arrive at 1:00 p.m. and will be encouraged to look around the meeting room to see a visual representation of the park’s history while people are arriving. Refreshments and small desserts will be available for you as you arrive. Information will be provided by representatives from the Northern Rocky Mountain Grotto, the Friends of Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park group, and the AmeriCorps member Brian Turner. They will be available to discuss what their organizations have done for the park in the past and will be able talk about future volunteering options.

Following the history display officials will invite everyone who wishes to join for the hike on the upper Nature Loop and a portion of the Greer Gulch trail where they will be learning more about the CCC history of the park. The walk be led by Interpretive program specialist Ken Soderberg, and will be just over a mile. This hike will be along a relatively narrow path with steep grade in some places. Depending on the weather there may still be snow on the trail, so guests are reminded to dress accordingly. This walk will be the conclusion of the day’s events, but everyone is encouraged to stay and enjoy the trails as they are open to the public all year. As a final reminder, the cave will remain closed until the beginning of May.
