Recently, a picture of the 1930 Cardwell High School football team was posted for sale on e-bay. Naturally, that intrigued me, so with the help of Roy Millegan’s compiling of information from years and years of newspapers, I located some fascinating stories. Football was first played at Cardwell according to what I found, in1929, but no records of the games, etc. There didn’t seem to be a name for the High School team. Scores were crazy. One was Cardwell 115 to 0 over Twin Bridiges! Whitehall often beat Cardwell, and Cardwell won a few. I would love to see the original picture of that 1930 team for the history that is being compiled for the 100th anniversary next year. Some of the players were: Donald Powell, Clovis Hinton, Dick Hanson, Kirby Hicklin, Reese Puckett. They played on the dirt on the West side of school and the equipment was very primitive. Is it possible to find a rule book from that era? HELP

During a stop at the school on Friday it was discovered that all of the students were in the gym celebrating Dr. Seuss. The cutest attire was teacher, Mrs. Rossiter, in her one piece footie pajamas. One student he shed his pj’s because they were too hot. Some kids were playing a version of pin the tail on the donkey, Dr. Seuss style. The whole week had been designed to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday and his contribution to reading.

Don’t forget the up-coming dance/labor auction for the 7th and 8th grades end of the year trip finances. The labor auction will be a silent auction that will be going on during the dancing. Probably good exercise for some of the more adventuresome.

Wyatt Biggers competed in the County Spelling Bee recently. He did well, but was disappointed in his elimination.

Pinochle was played as usual with Judy Simmons as hostess. Prizes were given to Michael Clark for High: Marion Poff, Second; Judy Simmons, Low; and Florence Weyer, Pinochle. Michael will host next and Don Simmons filled in for the afternoon as the only guest.

Special Olympics for the winter are being held in Whitefish and the snow is perfect. And, it has continued to snow. One of the buses had to be abandoned at Ramsay and the roads through Missoula and beyond were slushy, but the contestants from this area are there attacking the slopes. Rhoda Powell is one of the guides.

The Jefferson Valley Museum finalized plans for the annual meeting on April 6, 2017 at the Methodist Church Fellowship. Arlene Weber is accumulating photos and research of the area cemeteries to present intriguing facts, etc. about the area. Projects for the Spring opening will require extra labor, so planning has begun.

Kelsey Farrand and son, Rance, were honored by family and friends at a baby shower at the Cardwell Church. Trista and Kyra Armstrong and Kyra’s roommate, Aubree, saw that the evening was entertaining. Kelsey’s Mom and sister from Ronan were there to help hold and snuggle Rance. Kelsey’s Mother-in-law, Martha Farrand, had done much of the planning and preparation and then she got the flu - sick for a week! - and was very disappointed that she was home! A delicious menu was ready for the guests to snack on while games were played and visiting kept everyone busy. Rance will be the best dressed little guy in Bozeman. In Psalm 127:3 “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb is His reward.”
