Editorial: Upcoming party shows safe way to have fun

This weekend millions around the country will gather at various locations to watch Super Bowl 51. The game that decides the champion of the National Football League, has taken on a life of its own. Along with the die-hard fans, the game also draws interest from the casual fan, people who want to see the halftime show, and people who hate sports and are only interested in watching and deciding the best commercials.

Much of this viewing is done at numerous parties at houses, bars, restaurants, and various other places. Many people have vocally stated that day after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday and nobody should have to work. Personally I think that is ludicrous, but the movement is growing.

This year students in Jefferson County will have an opportunity to attend a Super Bowl party in Boulder that is being catered to ninth through 12th graders at Jefferson County and Whitehall High Schools.

The whole idea behind the party is show students that they don’t need to have a wild party full of alcohol to enjoy the big game. They can come together and have a great time without any sort of drug or alcohol. Along with the chance to watch the game and socialize with friends, the students will be able to eat a lot of good food and have the chance to win a lot of really nice prizes.

If enough Whitehall students signed up to go to the event in Boulder, a bus will be provided. There has been talk of a party also taking place in Whitehall in the near future, but for now the bus is a great way to involve Whitehall students with the event.

Like it or not, the Super Bowl is a big deal. This party is a great way for younger people to learn that they can have a ton of fun at a Super Bowl party or for that matter any other party without drugs or alcohol.

Jefferson County, the Jefferson County DUI Task Force, the Tobacco Use Prevention Program, Mariah’s Challenge and the C.A.R.E. Coalition should be commended for putting this party together.
