Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana
Going into last week's Choteau Tournament, Whitehall High School wrestling coach Steve Sacry knew the event would give a good snapshot of the many wrestlers his squad would be competing with at the B/C state tournament. The Trojan squad showed they were among the best in the state with a fifth place finish.
Sacry said while wrestling is very much an individual sport, team points are gained for each win and advancement in the tournament.
"We had set a team goal of being in the top five. The first round gave us some unexpected challenges and setbacks. The team was in 12th place after that initial round. The boys regrouped and got to work. With each consecutive round our rank increased," he said. "When the finals were compete, we had finished in fifth place. I was very proud of the boys and their efforts."
Leading the way for Whitehall was junior standout Dawson Hoerauf who finished with a 2-1 record and a second place finish at 285 pounds.
Sacry said sophomore Connor Johnson was disqualified from his first match, and had to wrestle back through consolation bracket. Johnson did so in impressive fashion and finished with five straight wins and a third place finish.
Braxtyn Armstrong (5-2), Riley Forcella (4-2), and Clancy Russell (2-2) all finished in fifth place. Mike Wilkinson (3-3) finished in sixth place for Whitehall.
Sacry said Kayden Howser was forced into the junior varsity tournament and won all four of his matches. Adrian Bright and Wyatt Scheller also won junior varsity matches. Sacry said Wyatt Powers was unable to make the trip due to illness.
The team also competed last Thursday at a mixer at Jefferson High School in Boulder. Sacry said team scores were not kept, but Armstrong was the high point setter for the team with 31 points in two matches. He said Scheller had the quickest pin for the Trojans.
This week the team will travel to a mixer Friday at Highwood, and a tournament Saturday at Great Falls Central.
The Trojans will conclude their home season Tuesday, January 24. The event will serve as senior night for the team. The two seniors on the 2017 Trojan team are Braxtyn Armstrong and manager Isabella Rodriguez. Sacry said the signups for Little Guy wrestling will also be that night and the kids will be part of team introductions.
