Ladies get two more victories

Three games into the season, it is already crystal clear there is something special about the 2016-17 Whitehall High School girl's basketball team.

After matching their win total from last season with a season opening win over Manhattan Christian, the Lady Trojans picked up two more wins at last week's Manhattan Invitational to improve their record to 3-0.

Head Coach Herman Gerving said it has been wonderful to see the Lady Trojans start to play with confidence.

Whitehall opened up the tournament in convincing fashion last Friday with a 56-39 win over Cut Bank.

On Saturday, Whitehall came out of the gates strong, and took a 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Trojans would once again outscore the Lady Wardens by three in the second quarter, and took a 19-13 lead into the break.

Whitehall increased the lead by one at the end of the third on their way to a 41-35 victory.

Gerving said in both games the team gave up a few runs, but they did not panic.

"They kept their heads up and kept fighting," he said.

Senior standout Kaya Welch led the team against Deer Lodge with a game high 13 points. Freshmen post player Isabel Evans was also in double figures with 12 points. Dorothy Mastel added six, Rachel Smith had four, Bryn Welker finished with three, Mesquite Melton had two and Ann Russell had one point.

Whitehall will next play Friday when they host Three Forks. Gerving said the Lady Wolves are a tough team, but he know his team will come out and give them a game.
