Lady Trojans start strong

The Whitehall High School girl's basketball team could not have asked for a better start to their 2016-17 season.

The Lady Trojans used a strong second quarter on their way to a 50-46 season opening win at Manhattan Christian.

"What a wonderful way to start off the year. They played like champions," head coach Herman Gerving said.

After falling behind 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, Whitehall outscored the Lady Eagles 10-4 in the second quarter to take a 20-17 halftime lead. Whitehall would once again outscore MCHS in the third, and had a 34-29 lead entering the final quarter where they hung on for the victory.

"I was impressed with how when things didn't always go the way they wanted, they kept their focus. A complete team win," Gerving said.

Whitehall was led in scoring by sophomore post player Dorothy Mastel with 14. Seniors Kaya Welch and Mesquite Melton each had nine, senior Rachel Smith had seven, freshmen Isabel Evans had seven and senior Bryn Welker added four points. This week the team will once again travel to Manhattan for a two-day tournament.

"We need to continue working on fundamentals and rebounding," Gerving said.
