Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Plenty of kids activities at Jefferson County Fair

Calling parents and grandparents! Time to get your kids' exhibits ready for "A Fair of the Heart", the Jefferson County Fair, August 25-28, at the Jefferson County Recreation Park one-half mile south of Boulder. A ribbon is guaranteed to all exhibits and there are cash prizes for purple, heart and best in show ribbons.

Fair events and contests for children include:

• Chickens, photography, crafts, foods, sewing: you name it, we have a category for it or we will make one up. See the fair book for entry ideas. People can enter exhibits in the fair no matter where they live.

• The kids' horse show and rodeo, starting at 8 a.m. Friday, August 26. Due to limited arena space, only Jefferson County residents are eligible to enter. Don't have a horse? No problem, come and watch the show for free.

• The kids' parade on Friday, August 26, starting at noon. Kids dressed in costume line up 10 minutes before noon, walk down Main Street to an admiring crowd, and are guaranteed a prize and a ribbon at the end of the walk. This is a fun and easy way to be a part of the fair and your kids will love it.

• The coloring contest. Pick up coloring contest sheets in local businesses or email bullheadm@aol.com. Bring to the fair by 2 pm, Friday, August 26, or mail them in. Pick up exhibits and prizes Sunday after 4.

• The zuke competition. Use a zucchini to create an animal, insect, or whatever the imagination devises. Bring it to the fair by 10 am, Saturday, August 27, to be admired and awarded a ribbon.

• The stick horse rodeo for little buckaroos is held on Sunday at 11 am. Kids aged six and under compete for ribbons, prizes, a stick horse, and the Paula Heide Memorial silver belt buckle. Sign up Sunday, August 28, starting at 10 a.m.

• The Treasure Hunt in the Hay. Hundreds of prizes are hidden under a pile of hay. Kids dive in for free treats at noon on Sunday, August 28.

• Puppet shows by Toni Person will bring a smile to every face Sunday afternoon.

Inflatables, laser tag and climbers are great fun for kids on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's family-friendly barn dance with Insufficient Funds band for $1 admission, Boulder River Carousel rides for a quarter, live music and delicious fair food.
