Serving Southern Jefferson County in the Great State of Montana

Like a Disney movie

I had the chance to walk to work the other morning and have to admit it was a great way to start the day.

The temperature had yet to hit 50 and while there was crispness in the air, the views and blue sky made it well worth it. There was a symphony of birds, and I was surprised to see so many people out doing the same thing. I almost felt like I was in a Disney movie. I was almost expecting a plethora of movie friendly characters to join me as I frolicked down the street. I even saw a large group running down the street and for a moment I wish I could have joined them. Two tore ligaments in my knee and a fear of surgery prevented me from following them, but it seemed like they were also getting a great jump on the day.

As I was walking through the residential streets on the way to the office, I was reminded that I’m pretty lucky to be doing what I do for a living. A few weeks ago we had a traveling sales person show up at our door. I can’t think of many jobs that could be worse than showing up in a town and trying to sell people something they most likely don’t need.

I saw the sales person walking through the neighborhood and shouted in the house for know one to open the door. I’m the type of person that usually feels bad for someone selling something, so I wanted nothing to do with this. I can remember when I was about 15 and wasting all of my birthday money on a poorly made key chain by some kid that was going door to door. I should have kept it as a reminder to show people this is what can happen when you open the door.

Melissa happened to make eye contact with him through the front window and answered the door. She sat and listened to him go on and on about the product. She didn’t want to be rude, but after about 20 minutes told him no thank you and he left.

One of my favorite things to do is to sit and watch hours and hours of true crime, and this has kind of made me perhaps a little too cautious. This was another reason I didn’t want to answer the door. I thought he could have been casing our house and others in the neighborhood, and would return in the middle of the night. It didn’t happen, but I’ve seen enough weird stuff watching these shows that it wouldn’t be out the realm of possibility.

Part of my job requires asking people if they want to put an ad in the paper, but this really isn’t the same as going to a random house and doing the same.

I had the opportunity to sell cars for a short period of time and it was really interesting to see the different styles my coworkers had. Much like the guy who came to our door, many of them were ultra aggressive and this made me cringe. I often wondered how they were able to sell anything this way, but they did. There is a good aggressive, and a bad aggressive. They were bad. I was more low key and gave an honest approach. I did okay, but it was something I never wanted to do again. Life is far better in the field of journalism.

I think I should really start walking to work more; the Disney setting was perfectly fine by me.
