    Ballots were mailed out October 23 for the November 7 election on the question of Creation of the Jefferson Valley Rural Ambulance District and the election of five directors. The number of candidates for the five directors is the same as the amount who will sit on the board. They include Dana Brunet, Amy DuBois, Rico Patacini, Susan Pullman and Tara L. Tebay.     After a lengthy discussion about what the role NCI Engineering has been taking in helping to address water issues, the Whitehall Town Council voted unanimously October 17 to pay an over $28,000 bill to the firm based out of Great Falls. According to Mayor Dale Davis, the town received a bill two weeks, and did not get a contract from the firm until three weeks ago. They canceled the taxes on a few mobile homes that are no longer functional and where we would have no opportunity to ever collect the back taxes.     The Whitehall Town Council voted 4-1 to give Dr. Cory Tebay of Western Veterinary Services a buy/sell agreement with contingencies for the purchase of the ambulance barn located at 207 East Legion. At a special meeting Tuesday night, Whitehall Town Attorney Ed Guza said the offer made by Tebay for the building was $288,000.     Officials at the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine discussed three underground projects at last weeks Community Transition Advisory Committee meeting in Whitehall. Mine Environmental Superintendent Chuck Buus said they are currently working with the state to update permits to go underground at the North Area Pit South Area Extension (NASA), and 2B locations at the mine. Most of the time the claims are pretty routine and straight forward. Occasionally, something will pop out to one of us and we all look at it a little better.     Dry conditions plagued Montana this summer, with multiple wildfires torching over 1 million acres throughout the state. The largest fire, the Lodgepole Complex fire, impacted over 270,000 acres.     The Whitehall Town Council will conduct a special meeting Tuesday, October 17 to vote on approval of its 2018-19 fiscal year budget. The meeting will take place at 5 p.m. at Town Hall. The special meeting had originally been scheduled for October 12.     In the latest weekly report from the highway patrol, a total of 145 fatalities have taken place in 2017 on Montana roads. The number in 2016 was 152. 25 of the fatalities have taken place in District 3 (Butte) which includes Whitehall and Cardwell. In District 3, there has been 11 fatalities on the interstate, nine on primary roads, one on a rural road, three on secondary roads and one on an urban road. In the report, alcohol was suspected as a contributing factor in 32.41 of the 145 fatalities in Montana. Speed was suspected in 37.24 percent,...

    Enrollment numbers continue to rise at the two Whitehall secondary schools. At the Board of Trustees meeting last week, Whitehall 6-12 Principal Hannah Nieskens said the enrollment at the high school is now 139 after recently adding two freshman and a sophomore. She said they also added a student in the middle school, bringing the sixth to eighth grade total to 86. “It‘s exiting we are getting more kids,” Nieskens aid.     Chuchos Tacos in Whitehall has a new home. The restaurant that was previously located at 14 East Legion has moved into the Chief Motel Building at 303 East Legion.     Hi Folks, At our regular meeting last week we were finally able to get all of the various levies in from the Towns and Schools so we could approve Resolution 32-2017, Fixing Tax Levies for FY 17-18. We also approved Resolution 33-2017, Declaring October Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Jefferson County. We encourage all County employees to wear pink on Tuesdays throughout October to show support.     The Town of Whitehall has cancelled the November 7 General Election for municipal officer positions. Because there is no election, five will be elected to municipal positions by acclimation. Mary Janacaro Hensleigh will be the new Mayor, Katy James is elected as a Council Member in Ward 1, Barbara Gagnon is elected in Ward 2, and Jason Good and Montina Rawson are elected in Ward 3.   • Plane runs into home

    The Federal Aviation Administration and Montana Highway Patrol are investigating a plane accident that took place the afternoon of September 21 in Whitehall. According to Jefferson County Sheriff Craig Doolittle, a plane was apparently taxiing on the runway when it got away from the pilot and ran into a house at 36 S. Centurion Way. Doolittle stated no injuries were reported. Attempts to obtain information from the FAA were unsuccessful as of press time.... Full story
