    Longtime Whitehall Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeremy Ward has resigned from his position. The Whitehall Town Council approved his resignation at their monthly meeting on Monday. Ward has served in the position for 7.5 years. He has taken a management position with the State of Montana in Butte and will remain as a volunteer for the department.     Whitehall area residents will soon have the opportunity to purchase tickets for Holiday Candlelight Tours at Lewis and Clark Caverns. Tickets will go on sale for the popular annual candle lantern-lit tours that are scheduled for December 20, 21, 22 27, 28 and 29. Eight tours are offered from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day.     The Whitehall Town Council is exploring forming their own police department. They also want to examine contracting out the town's garbage service. The governing body voted unanimously last week to start taking a closer look at both issues.     On the evening of Friday, November 15 between 11 pm and midnight, a small silver crossover SUV drove south down Main Street and straight through the elementary school fence.     After a lengthy discussion, the Whitehall Town Council voted 3-2 last Tuesday to hire Ron Noe as a third public works employee. Council members Logan Reiff and Shawn Hoagland voted in approval of the hiring, and members Gary Housman and Katy James voted against.     A tailings reprocessing project could breathe new life into the Barrick Golden Sunlight Mine near Whitehall. At last week's Community Transition Advisory Committee Meeting, Steve Lloyd said the TSF 1 and 2 Tailing Projects are gaining lots of traction, adding they will be meeting soon with Barrick officials to get a yes or no answer on moving forward.     Lighting was the cause of the McClusky Fire that started August 16 approximately three miles northeast of Delmoe Lake and 13 miles northwest of Whitehall. The fire is burning in lodgepole pine in steep, rugged, inaccessible terrain with high concentrations of standing dead trees and logs on the ground.
