The Whitehall Chamber’s annual fundraiser, Black Tie Blue Jeans (BTBJ), has been the topic of many discussions recently, though a lot of misinformation has transpired. The BTBJ fundraiser is not up for grabs or leaving the Chamber’s control. The Chamber has ended its fiscal sponsorship with JVCF to put the control of the event entirely under the Chamber’s umbrella, including the creation of a Friends of the Chamber 501c3. BTBJ will live on in some form in the fall - the Chamber is revamping and revitalizing the event; the event is not disap...
The Whitehall Town Council’s March meeting was quick and to the point, lasting less than 45 minutes on Monday, March 13. The biggest news of the evening: the announcement of Allissa Christensen’s resignation from the Whitehall Town Clerk/Treasurer position. Christensen has taken the School Clerk position effective April 17. “It has been a pleasure working with some of you,” she said. “I appreciate those who have been kind and patient with me as I navigated through this challenging job. Those members of the public who have been vindictiv...
Who are the Friends of the NRA? What good can the Friends do for our community? First, let me explain that we work for a Grant program. The program is set up so one-half of the money we raise in Montana STAYS in Montana. The other half goes into a national pool for all to draw from. In both cases, it is a 501(c)3. None of the money is used politically. It is all charitable. Each year in January committees around the state meet in Helena and fund requested grants. This year we were able to...

At the February school board meeting held on Tuesday, February 7, Cardwell School board member Levi Simon appealed to the Whitehall School Board to address inconsistencies in the letter sent to elementary students by the school the previous week. For background, the Whitehall Ledger had published an article announcing that Family Minded online had deemed the Cardwell School as the top elementary school in Montana. This was based on not only test scores but a plethora of other criteria. The Whitehall school responded with a letter to parents...
Montana is being flooded with transplants from all over the country looking for small-town, less-stress life. For many locals, this is frustrating because our Montana ways are being forgotten for big box stores, expensive condos, and less "traditional" ways of making a living in the Big Sky state. Schooling options are limited, all dependent upon where one decides to call home. With miles between each school, and private education options limited, students go to where they live closest....

After a highly commented public work session on Wednesday, January 4, many thought the January Town Council meeting on Monday, January 9 would be crowded as well. However, the room held the standard number of attendees as per usual, though obviously absent were the TSS cameras which normally record and air the meeting on public access channels. During opening remarks, Mayor Mary Janacaro-Hensleigh mentioned that, while absent from the December meeting, she had a chance to watch the meeting aired. She found the quality poor and hard to hear, so...
