At the August meeting of the Whitehall Rec Complex Board, held Monday, August 28 at the Town Hall, the Board voted to recommend a final proposal of the Whitehall Saddle Club (WSC) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to the Whitehall Town Council. A 911 distress call of two individuals kayaking at Delmoe Lake on Sunday, August 27, 2023, resulted in tragedy. Jefferson County Undersheriff James Everett said a male and a female were kayaking at Delmoe Lake Sunday evening; their kayak tipped and the male could not account for the female and called 911. Fourteen survivors of domestic violence from across the country visited Montana for a week of healing though We Are HER's annual Survivor Retreat. We Are HER is a Cardwell-based nonprofit that helps survivors of abuse or assault heal after trauma. They work specifically with survivors who are out of crisis or dangerous situations. Three women were injured by an otter Wednesday, August 2, 2023, about three miles upstream from Sappington Bridge. The women, who were floating the river on innertubes were approached and attacked; all three sustained injuries; Stephanie Johnson, of Bozeman, was life-flighted by helicopter to Bozeman Deaconess. Last weekend, some 4,000 revelers arrived at a pasture between Cardwell and Three Forks for Headwaters Country Jam, an annual three-day country music festival. Allegations of animal abuse, a puppy mill, and more have been made by Todd Preece against Michael and Roberta Coffey, who own property at 178 Ringing Rocks Road. The 100-acre property abuts Preece’s. Preece feels that the animals on the Coffey property are mistreated, malnourished and that the couple is “thumbing their nose” at the police. As of June 10, when Coffey moved the majority of their animals to the lower 12 acres next to Preece’s, Preece has made numerous complaints to authorities for barking dogs and mistreatment. Around 2007, Whitehall Ledger owner Greg Corr began PUSH PENNIES. Meant to give those in need the extra "push" they need, donation boxes were placed at the grocery store, gas stations, and other local businesses in hopes that change would be donated.
