  • Candidates Offer Views on Government Transparency, Right-To-Know to Montana Newspaper Association

    JIM STRAUSS, Montana Newspaper Association|Oct 16, 2024

The Montana Newspaper Association surveyed candidates for the state legislature, Public Service Commission and statewide offices about their positions on government accountability, transparency and the right to know. Of 281 candidates receiving survey, 111 responded, or about 40%. Among respondents—including Republicans, Democrats, and independents, from Butte to Wibaux—there is a consensus that the right to know is imperative for our state’s democracy. While the low return rate is disappointing, we appreciate those who responded during this...

    ALEX SAKARIASSEN, Montana Free Press|Oct 16, 2024

In addition to a slate of federal and statewide races, Montana voters next month will be asked to weigh in on a pair of proposed amendments to the state Constitution rewriting the very process by which they choose their elected officials. Taken together, Constitutional Initiatives 126 and 127 would amend the Montana Constitution to alter the face of even-year elections from start to finish. CI-126 would jettison the state's separate party June primaries in favor of a single multi-party primary...

    AMANDA EGGERT, Montana Free Press|Oct 16, 2024

With some studies finding that home insurance rates have ballooned 44% in Montana over the past five years, the affordability and availability of insurance have become cornerstone issues in the state auditor election. James Brown, a Republican currently serving as president of Montana’s utility board, is squaring off against John Repke, a Democrat and retired businessman, for the open seat to become Montana’s top consumer watchdog. Whoever wins the election on Nov. 5 will assume the helm of an agency with a $10 million budget and a 72-employee...

  • Op Ed: Our Threatened Outdoors

    Aug 21, 2024

These resources have traditionally been managed according to the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, which holds that wildlife is a public resource held in trust by the state, should be allocated democratically, and should not be commercially exploited. These principles have allowed Montanans of ordinary means to enjoy our outdoors. Now the scales have started to tip in favor of wealthy out of state inter...

  • Litigating Your Right to Know

    Montana Transparency Project|Jul 24, 2024

In our prior columns, we’ve written about your fundamental RIGHT TO KNOW and how it provides all Montanans with an important way to interact with our state and local governments: You have a RIGHT TO KNOW how your government makes decisions, spends money, and conducts its business, and you can get that information by simply asking the most relevant state or local agency (and we’d love to help you do so!). Much of the time, Montanans can make requests and receive information at no personal cost. But as hinted in our last column about the dan...
