  • Governor Gianforte Prohibits Use of TikTok for State Business, on State Equipment

BROOKE STROYKE, Office of the Governor|Dec 21, 2022

Governor Greg Gianforte prohibited the use of TikTok on state equipment and for state business in Montana on Friday, December 16. In a memo to Chief Information Officer Kevin Gilbertson and executive agency directors, the governor cited TikTok’s practice of harvesting expansive amounts of data from its users’ devices and offering this information to the Chinese Communist Party. “Government’s chief responsibility is keeping its citizens safe and secure,” Governor Gianforte wrote. “Use of TikTok on state devices poses a significant risk to the...

  • Montana Decides: Congrats, Considerations, and a Clarification

    JON STONE GOFF, Montana Decides|Nov 23, 2022

Much like vote counting results in some places around the country, I am a little slow on delivery. However, local elections are officially in the rearview mirror. Approximately 58 percent of registered Jefferson County voters participated from the ten precincts within the county. The good news is that this was on par with the state, whose total turnout was just over 60 percent. Since it’s our number one responsibility as sovereign actors within our government, perhaps we should expect higher p...

  • Jefferson County Voter Turnout Lower Than Anticipated

    CHARLIE DENISON, Boulder Monitor|Nov 16, 2022

Clerk and Recorder Ginger Kunz had a hard time believing her eyes when she saw voter turnout in Jefferson County was only 69%. “We were so busy,” she said. “I was thinking, ‘oh, my gosh, this is a great turnout. Then it’s all said and done and I was like, ‘69 percent?’ I swore we would have been closer to 80%, but I know that’s just tunnel vision since I’ve been hearing from 6,000 voters.” Out of 9,479 registered voters in the county, only 6,532 submitted ballots, including the 140 provisional ballots that were determined Nov. 14. It’s not a...

  • Gianforte Unveils Historic Pro-Family, Pro-Jobs Budget

BROOKE STROYKE, Office of the Governor|Nov 16, 2022

Governor Greg Gianforte today unveiled his “Budget for Montana Families,” a historic pro-family, pro-jobs budget for the State of Montana for the next biennium. Governor Gianforte’s “Budget for Montana Families” provides $1 billion in income and property tax relief to Montanans in the largest tax cut in state history. The budget also invests in infrastructure, state-run facilities, education, and safer communities through more law enforcement and treatment programs. Additionally, the budget makes the State of Montana debt-free in 2023, pay...

  • Relief, Gratitude, and Silver Linings: Candidates Speak

    CHARLIE DENISON, Boulder Monitor|Nov 16, 2022

By the time the sun rose Nov. 9 the two contested Jefferson County races appeared to have clear winners, as Sheriff candidate Tom Grimsrud led Chad Cross 3,358 to 2,524 and county commission candidate Dan Hagerty led Mary Janacaro Hensleigh 3,950 to 1,770. The Board of Canvassers will certify the election. As the process is finalized, however, candidates have accepted the results. All four spoke with The Monitor and shared their thoughts on the election results and what their priorities are moving forward. Tom Grimsrud relieved, excited for...

  • Hagerty and Hensleigh Vie for Jefferson County Commissioner Seat

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Oct 26, 2022

Jefferson County Commissioner candidates Mary Janacaro-Hensleigh and Dan Hagerty, both from Whitehall, are looking forward to Election Day on November 8th, both admitting it will be nice once the race for the Commissioner seat is complete. “Honestly, I’m tired of political campaigns in general,” Hensleigh said with a laugh. Hensleigh is currently the town of Whitehall’s mayor, and has been for the last 10 years; she will release the position to Town Council Chair Roy Milligan should she be elected as County Commissioner. “It should be very s...

  • Montana Decides: The Long Green Mile

    JON STONE GOFF, Montana Decides|Oct 19, 2022

I’m going to combine two stories, one fictional and one real. In the 1999 fictional film, The Green Mile, the “green mile” referred to the stretch of green linoleum that death row inmates walked to Louisiana’s electric chair. When I was a kid, my father used to refer to cash as “long green.” What do you get when you combine the two stories? Like the prison inmates, perhaps what you get is the worthy dollars’ inevitable demise as a productive public resource at the end of that analogous lin...

  • 50 Years of the Clean Water Act: More Must Be Done

DERF JOHNSON, MT Environmental Information Center|Oct 19, 2022

The Clean Water Act turns 50 on October 18th. Over the past five decades, it has proven itself as one of the most successful environmental laws on the books. It has cleaned up contaminated waterways, helped to assure that the drinking water coming out of your tap is safe for your kids, and protected the ecological integrity of rivers and streams. Indeed, without the Clean Water Act, Montana would not be the state it is today. But far more must be done in order for us to reach the promise of the Clean Water Act – which is to prevent, reduce, and...

  • Guest Opinion: Broad Coalition Supports Gustafson and Rice for Supreme Court

    Oct 12, 2022

Absentee ballots will soon be mailed out for November’s election. Two of the most important elections on the ballot are for Montana’s Supreme Court. We, as a group of Montana attorneys, former and current elected officials, and concerned citizens, are committed to supporting our Montana and United States Constitutions. We believe in the rule of law and the separation of powers between our executive, legislative, and judicial branches. We also believe in the absolute need for a fair, independent, and non-partisan judiciary to interpret our law...

  • So What's This Thing Called the American Dream?

    ROGER KOOPMAN, Guest Contributor|Oct 5, 2022

They called him Reinhart, but he would one day change his name to Ralph to sound more American than German. Huddled with his parents and three siblings in steerage class, he arrived at Ellis Island at the age of one. He grew up in Brooklyn, while his father scratched out a living as best he could. Henry had brought his family to America “to escape the Kaiser and his wars,” while seeking the freedom of a free land. Although he had very little, he thought himself rich. He had come to America, kissed the ground, and never looked back. The str...

  • Montana Decides: If It Moves (or Doesn't), Tax It

    JON STONE GOFF, Montana Decides|Sep 21, 2022

Most of you recall the famous quote from Ronald Reagan, “Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.” Yes, that means real property as well, which tends to not move but is taxed to help cover the costs of running schools and local governments. My last article, “When You Find Yourself In a Hole Stop Digging” which is still available at www.montanadecides....

  • Why We Called for Legislative Special Session

    Sep 21, 2022

When you order a pizza and the total comes to $25 and you hand them a fifty dollar bill, have you ever had the restaurant tell you that they are going to keep your change in case their expenses are higher in the future? We know this sounds absurd, but not for the state government. Over the last two years, the state of Montana has over collected $1.6 Billion in unanticipated, unexpected, and unappropriated money from you, the Montana taxpayer. It is money that we did not need to run the state government for the biennium. Recently, there was a...
