JASON SLEAD, Montana Department of Revenue|Aug 30, 2023

Starting August 24, all Montana property tax rebates will be sent by paper check in the mail. To reduce the risk of fraud perpetuated by scam artists, the Montana Department of Revenue removed the option for taxpayers to receive the property tax rebate by direct deposit. The department received applications where applicants entered banking information for direct deposit that did not match banking information in the department’s records. While some of these claims are qualified taxpayers who have changed banks, some are criminals filing f...

  • MT Judge Hands Historic Win to Young Plaintiffs in Climate Change Case

    CLARK MINDOCK, Reuters|Aug 16, 2023

Montana is violating the rights of young people with policies that prohibit the state from considering climate change effects when it reviews coal mining, natural gas extraction and other fossil fuel projects, a state judge said Monday. The decision by Judge Kathy Seeley in Helena marked a major victory in the first youth-led climate case to reach trial in the U.S. and could set an important precedent for similar cases nationwide. The 16 plaintiffs sued Montana in 2020, when they were ages 2 to 18, claiming the state’s permitting of projects l...

  • Legislative Update: Representative Marta Bertoglio: Property Taxes

    MARTA BERTOGLIO, Montana Representative|Jul 26, 2023

When I opened my Department of Revenue (DOR) appraisal notice I, like many of you, was shocked by the increase in my property tax estimate. Even though I read on the first page, “THIS IS NOT YOUR PROPERTY TAX BILL”, I was still concerned. I understand the angst and confusion regarding this process because property owners question the accuracy of the fair market value and secondly the possible increase in their property taxes. Please remember that property taxes are local. This means that local s...

  • Department of Revenue Director Brendan Beatty: Montana Property Taxes Explained

BRENDAN BEATTY, Montana Department of Revenue|Jul 26, 2023

By now, most Montana property owners have opened their 2023 Property Classification and Appraisal Notices, and many have been surprised by the Montana Department of Revenue’s estimate of their property’s market value. It’s no secret that property in Montana has been selling at higher and higher prices, but the size of the increased values is astonishing to everyone — including me. These value increases and estimated 2023 General Taxes described on the notice — based upon the prior year’s mills — have created a great deal of confusion, fear, and...

  • Commissioners Seek Input on Speed Limit for Mormon Lane, More

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Jul 19, 2023

The July 11 meeting of the Jefferson County Commissioners was held in Whitehall at the Borden’s conference room. During this meeting, two items of Whitehall importance were discussed: the consideration of lowering the speed limit on Mormon Lane and allegations of animal abuse on Ringing Rocks Rd. Commissioner Kory Kirsch said that a traffic study to see if lowering the speed limit is feasible costs about $40,000 and requested that area residents voice their opinion about lowering the limit from 35 mph to 25 mph before the study is approved. ...
