The Whitehall Bio Control team managed to collect all 120+ releases of leafy spurge flea beetles. Thank you to the local landowner who allowed us to collect on their fine property. This week we have a bit of a lull in insect collections as the toadflax and spurge insects are finished and the spotted knapweed insects have not emerged in great enough numbers to be collectable. We will clean up the insectary at the high school and monitor past and future release sites. We are hearing from many...
JULY 29, 1998 Area rodeo fans were treated to back-to-back nights of outstanding action during the 1998 Frontier Days NRA Rodeo at the Whitehall Rodeo Grounds on July 24-25. Some of the top-ranked Northern Rodeo Association competitors participated in the Whitehall rodeo, and cowboys and cowgirls from throughout Montana rode and roped their way into prize money. The 1998 Frontier Days Rodeo was a true Whitehall production: Lillian Rodeo in Whitehall organized the event and provided stock, Brady...

This whimsical treat is ideal for special gatherings. Pumpkin spice may be all the rage in October and November, but it's all about apples at the end of summer and in the early weeks of fall. Visiting a local orchard to hand-pick apples is an entertaining way to spend an afternoon with young or old, and it's a great opportunity to gather ingredients for apple pie. For fall birthdays or other special occasions, skip the celebratory cake for something even more eye-catching: an elaborately...
8 YEARS AGO - July Part II July 1897 was a super-hot one. The mid-section of the U.S. was sweltering and there were close to 850 deaths recorded from the heat across the nation. Chicago led the death toll with 87 followed by Cincinnati and St. Louis. Miners were flocking to the Klondike seeking their fortunes after reports of gold nuggets as large as a guinea hen egg. Utah was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Brigham Young and his pioneers in the Great Salt Lake Valley as...
JULY 22, 1998 Construction was underway on a 7,600-square-foot assisted living facility in Whitehall, and it was planned for the facility to be ready for occupancy as early as January 1999. Dr. Gayle and Kathryn Sacry of Whitehall were developing Meadowlark Manor, a 13-unit assisted living facility just west of the Whitehall town limits, next to the Sacry residence. Through Meadowlark Manor, the Sacrys hoped more people who might be forced to move away due to health issues would have the opportunity to remain in Whitehall. The Montana...
This summer is flying by, and I can't believe that Summer Reading ended this week. We will still have prizes from the store available through the middle of August for our readers who are on vacation. It was so much fun to create our own program that we decided to do it again next year. The ability to tailor the programs, themes, and crafts to our readers is a better fit for us than a national program. Brandi and I met with our friends at the school and set times and themes for Friday morning...

While no human cases of WNV were reported in 2022, in previous seasons Montana has reported over 50 human cases in a single s...

A spectacular picture recently appeared on social media of a young lady in Arizona. She was poised on the edge of a cliff emblazoned with sunset colors. Immediately her online followers clamored to know where the picture was taken, so “I can get one just like it.” Turns out that it was taken on an off-trail route at the end of a potholed dirt road on the Navajo Nation, and required a permit to even enter the area. Also, I bet she did not climb to that precarious perch on that cliff wearing those fancy shoes. A local guide lamented that the are...

Our summer is quickly moving along. The toadflax insects are finished. All the adults have laid eggs, and most have died of old age. We are in the middle of collecting leafy spurge flea beetles (Aphthona spp.) and are doing well with numbers. Next week we hope to start collecting spotted knapweed root boring weevils for the many requests we are receiving. We tried going to a former good flea beetle site in Missoula that we have collected from before however, it also is crashing so we only...
