8 Years Ago, October Part I: The Jefferson Valley Zephyr reported plenty of area news in early October 1897. Livingston suffered its worst fire when an abandoned building on Second Street caught fire. A new $40,000 theater opened in Anaconda called The Margaret. A sawmill 27 miles west of Missoula was burned to the ground at a loss of $15,000 not counting the production of 65,000 board feet of lumber per day and the jobs of 55 men. Miles City lost the MacQueen house to fire with a loss of...
October 7, 1998 After hearing 17 different witnesses during the October 5-6 trial, a Jefferson County jury found Jason Marker guilty of aggravated assault by accountability for his role in the January 2, 1998, Mint Bar incident, but reached no verdict on two counts of misdemeanor assault. Marker, 22, was charged with aggravated assault for kicking Bill Arnold in the head. Arnold suffered a broken nose, broken cheek, broken eye socket, and broken jaw during a violent incident that occurred close...
"Neither cold nor rain can keep us from our work," joked Bryher Herak, Basin, co-chair of Jefferson County Democrats. The group met recently to clean up trash along Highway 69 in front of the fairgrounds south of Boulder. "We Democrats live all over the county but we came together to get this done, and we had a good time doing it!" she said. About 30 people braved the blustery forty-degree afternoon, donning orange vests and carrying black trash bags, as they picked up items big and small along...

On October 1st, Blaine Myrstol and Montina Rawson's daughter, two-and-a-half-year-old Clara, was diagnosed with AML Leukemia and flown to Salt Lake for treatment. Clara has started Chemotherapy and has responded very well to it, but still has a long road ahead of her. They could potentially need to be in Salt Lake City's Primary Children's Hospital for six to seven months depending on what type of AML they determine it is. The Rawson's older daughter Taylor will remain in Whitehall to attend...
It wasn't a particularly scary day, but the WGC members were met with a brunch table of ghoulish delights. Jayne Dean and Glenna Waltee collaborated and devised morning treats to make the monsters mash! Nothing like starting your morning off with a witch's finger, or a deviled bloodshot eye! What a treat but with more treats to come when the meeting was called to order. President Kathy Ross introduced the first guest speaker, Heidi Austin, proprietor of the Healing Spot. Heidi's "Spot" offers a...
As the holidays approach, you might be hosting guests, shopping for gifts, and decorating your home. While all these activities can bring a lot of joy into the season, they can also bring an increase in risks. Prepare by following these five tips to prevent damage. 1. Install a smart doorbell. Whether you want to see who just arrived or help keep packages secure, a smart doorbell will keep you updated on all activities in front of your home. From trick-or-treaters to carolers, you can easily view (and communicate) with your visitors, even if...
As Montana gears up to enter another respiratory illness season, the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) encourages Montanans to take precautions to help protect against severe symptoms from COVID-19, influenza, pneumococcal pneumonia, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. The number of people ill due to respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, influenza, pneumococcal pneumonia, and RSV, is currently low across most of the United States but has increased in recent weeks. Montana has already begun seeing...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks along with the Montana Department of Health and Human Services are advising hunters to have their deer, elk, and moose tested for chronic wasting disease (CWD). FWP strongly recommends that hunters receive a negative CWD test result before bringing their deer, elk, or moose to a meat processor or donating it to a foodbank. While it is not a requirement, FWP is asking hunters to have a negative CWD test result in hand before bringing their animal to a processor for donation. If the animal tests positive for CWD,...
The “benefits” of anger are many. Stress, anxiety, diminished judgment, reduced productivity, poor digestion, sleeplessness, elevated blood pressure, negative impact on relationships, unhappiness, and attraction to negative situations can all be yours just by being angry. Anger repels people, destroys relationships, creates problems, intensifies problems, causes regret, burns bridges, and dissolves solutions. Anger doesn’t have to manifest itself via your behavior to be destructive. Anger that is internalized can be just as damaging. A fundamen...
The new playground on Legion Park is nearly complete. The playground was made possible by funding from the Dennis Washington Foundation, the Whitehall Sustainability Committee, the Whitehall TIF District, as well as several private donors....
This week - and every week, parents should have conversations with their teens about the important rules they need to follow to stay safe behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Know the Facts About Teen Driver Fatalities: • Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States. • 2,608 people were killed in crashes involving a tee...

A typical Thanksgiving dinner table is loaded with familiar foods. Turkey, of course, takes center stage, but side dishes also garner their fair share of attention during Thanksgiving dinner. Hosts don't have much room to experiment when preparing turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. Though turkey can be roasted, slow-cooked, smoked, or even fried, recipes for seasoning the bird are likely to feature similar ingredients. Hosts have much more leeway when it comes to side dishes. New and bold flavors...
As we prepare for an exciting Homecoming Week, I want to take a moment to express my appreciation for each one of our teachers, parents, and community members whose support makes our school and community shine. Homecoming Week is not just about celebrating our school's history and traditions; it's about coming together for the kids, fostering school spirit, and creating memories. It is a reflection of our commitment to providing the best possible educational experience for every student who...
Earlier this spring the Cardwell Community Church sponsored a free community ice cream social - the event was a huge success with an attendance of over one hundred people! The goal was to have fun, eat some ice cream, say thanks to our community for all they mean to us, and emphasize the Cardwell Community Church’s desire to provide a source of personal aid and spiritual insight to our area. In October the Cardwell Community Church will hold its free community social event, part II - but this time it will be an apple pie contest for the fun a...
SEPTEMBER 30, 1998 The Parent-Teacher Hotline came to Whitehall, which meant parents and community members could dial up school information at any time with a simple local telephone call. The Whitehall Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) spearheaded the effort to bring the hotline to Whitehall schools, and about 65 specific four-digit access numbers were provided for Whitehall parents. Last Monday, 40 Jefferson County residents made the long drive to the Sweetgrass border crossing to...
The new building that will soon be the Golden Sunlight Childcare Center was delivered to Main Street on Monday, October 4....

The authors are Kaleena Miller, Madison-Jefferson County Extension Agent, kaleena.miller1@montana.edu, and Marsha Goetting, MSU Extension Family Economics Specialist, marsha.goetting@montana.edu. “Couples living together should be aware that a court could later find their actions constitute a marriage,” says Marsha Goetting MSU Extension Family Economics Specialist. “They should be careful not to hold themselves out as married unless they are willing to accept the possi...
Fall is here and with it come the fall holidays. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for October 9th, as the Library will be closed for Columbus/Indigenous People’s Day. I have one calendar that calls it one thing and another that calls it the other, so I am going with both. We will be open the rest of the week for regular hours. Next Thursday evening, October 12th, at 6 PM the Library will be hosting a program on the history of the Lewis & Clark Caverns. Our favorite VISTA volunteer, Kenslee Jory, will be sharing all sorts of fun facts and the...

Fishing will close starting Oct. 1 for sections of the Big Hole, Ruby and Beaverhead rivers to protect trout during spawning season. The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission adopted emergency fishing regulations in June in response to struggling fish populations in the three rivers. These restrictions limit fall angling during the brown trout spawning season in some stretches of the rivers. Trout abundances in several areas of the three rivers have steadily declined since 2011 and are at or near historical lows. Meanwhile, fishing pressure in...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has recently received questions on Montana’s Stream Access Law and how it is applied across the state. For landowners and recreationists alike, it’s important to know about the law and understand how it applies to private land and water-based recreation. “The public has a right to enjoy water-based recreation on rivers and streams in Montana below the high-water mark,” said FWP Director Dustin Temple. “The public also has the right to access rivers and streams from the public road right of ways and easements...
This is the month where weird things happen. You know, the bump in the night, or that thing you see out of the corner of your eye. I have learned that after you shoot whatever it was, 65% of the time it makes a good dinner. The other 45% we don't talk about it, like your special uncle. I have been hearing about this big moth-like human crashing into cars around Highway 2. It seems to only crash into cars that have light bars on them. I mean those light bars that make you feel like you just looked at God. This creature is said to be some 6 feet...
