Guides in the outdoor industry inevitably come up with collective nicknames for customers. On horseback they’re “dudes,” on the river, they’re “mers” — short for customers — and they’re “sticks” if you’re trying to trick a trout. Sometimes the terms trend a little negative — “flatlander” comes to mind, and there’s another name I’ve come to use but need to explain it. It comes out of what I do: For the last decade, I’ve guided multi-day whitewater fly-fishing trips through western Colorado’s Gunnison Gorge during the summer. Then I spend the f...
Ned is the 30-ish son of Ma and Pa Boodle whose efforts to introduce girlfriends to his family don’t turn out very well. His family is somewhat “colorful”-his mother is a June Cleaver type at her homiest; his father is pretty clueless his grandpa manages a cat (rescue) house; and his sister Lulu is a hypochondriac with an equally germ-o-phobic boyfriend, Luke. Also, there’s the ever-helpful Jack, who resides in a cardboard appliance box in the middle of the Boodle living room, and the neighbor, Mrs. Doodah-Doodah. But Ned’s latest introduction...

As many gather for Thanksgiving celebrations with family and friends, the American Red Cross urges donors to give thanks and give back by making a plan to give blood in the coming weeks. This time of year is traditionally hard on the nation’s blood supply. Seasonal illness, winter weather, and holiday celebrations often lead to lower appointment numbers and decreased donor turnout, making it hard to keep up with the demand for blood products. When they give now, donors can ensure patients have access to lifesaving blood through the end of t...

Montana’s general hunting season has reached the midpoint this week with steady hunter numbers and mixed success rates as recorded at game check stations in southwestern Montana. Wildlife biologists with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks use check stations to collect data on hunter participation and success, as well as the species, sex, and age class of the animals harvested. This supplements data collected through hunter-harvest phone surveys each year. On Nov. 4 and 5, biologists operated four check stations in the region and met with 995 h...
