  • Tips to Ease the Stress of Upcoming Holiday Tasks

    Statepoint|Nov 29, 2023

From greeting cards to seasonal to-do lists, there’s a lot to write down and keep track of during the holidays. Use these tips and recommendations to reduce stress while you complete these important tasks: • To-do lists: Whether you’re listing the gifts you must buy for loved ones, the groceries you need to prepare a holiday feast, or the tasks you must complete before your guests arrive, writing and referencing a lengthy to-do list can be anxiety-provoking. However, choosing the colors of your stationery and writing utensils wisely can ease...

  • What Really Affects Hunting in the West

LESLI ALLISON, Writers on the Range|Nov 29, 2023

A disgruntled hunter wrote a Writers on the Range opinion recently about Westerners getting fed up with the many out-of-staters coming in and buying up draw licenses to shoot bull elk, deer, bear, and other big game animals. As a hunter myself, I understand their frustration. But reducing non-resident tags, as Andrew Carpenter suggests, takes us in the wrong direction. The greatest threat to hunting now and in the future is the loss of habitat. Private lands provide up to 80% of the habitat for all wildlife species, including the critical...

  • Help Available For Your Home Energy Bill

RACHEL HABERMAN, Energy Share of Montana|Nov 29, 2023

Many Montanans have heard about Energy Share of Montana, but may not realize exactly what it does. Energy Share helps Montanans who are facing the loss of heat or lights in their homes and who have no resources to pay the bill themselves. Assistance is situationally-based, not income-based. This means that even if someone has an income that is higher than normal poverty guidelines if their situation is such that they’re about to lose their heat or lights and they have no money in the bank to pay that bill, there is a good chance Energy Share ca...

As the use of these items has increased in recent years, so too has the number of fires associated with them. “Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly found in the man...

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Nov 22, 2023

8 Years Ago - November, Part II: In late 1897, the fledging State of Montana was becoming a little more civilized every day but also facing some of the same problems found in large eastern cities. The Woman Suffrage Association of Montana elected 1898 officers, with Jefferson County well represented by Mrs. Sherlock of Boulder as the vice president. A young druggist in Butte (who has recently come from New York) committed suicide by prussic acid due to unrequited love for a young woman who...

  • Live Rough and Know the Real World

JACOB RICHARDS, Writers on the Range|Nov 22, 2023

Guides in the outdoor industry inevitably come up with collective nicknames for customers. On horseback they’re “dudes,” on the river, they’re “mers” — short for customers — and they’re “sticks” if you’re trying to trick a trout. Sometimes the terms trend a little negative — “flatlander” comes to mind, and there’s another name I’ve come to use but need to explain it. It comes out of what I do: For the last decade, I’ve guided multi-day whitewater fly-fishing trips through western Colorado’s Gunnison Gorge during the summer. Then I spend the f...

  • Don't Miss NOODLES, Whitehall Community Theatre's Next Production

    Nov 22, 2023

Ned is the 30-ish son of Ma and Pa Boodle whose efforts to introduce girlfriends to his family don’t turn out very well. His family is somewhat “colorful”-his mother is a June Cleaver type at her homiest; his father is pretty clueless his grandpa manages a cat (rescue) house; and his sister Lulu is a hypochondriac with an equally germ-o-phobic boyfriend, Luke. Also, there’s the ever-helpful Jack, who resides in a cardboard appliance box in the middle of the Boodle living room, and the neighbor, Mrs. Doodah-Doodah. But Ned’s latest introduction...

The detection is a first for the park, which has previously managed to dodge the always-fatal disease despite its presence in the three states that neighbor Yellowstone. • Give Thanks and Give Back: Help Patients Relying on Blood Transfusions Throughout the Holidays

    MATT OSCHSNER, American Red Cross|Nov 22, 2023

As many gather for Thanksgiving celebrations with family and friends, the American Red Cross urges donors to give thanks and give back by making a plan to give blood in the coming weeks. This time of year is traditionally hard on the nation’s blood supply. Seasonal illness, winter weather, and holiday celebrations often lead to lower appointment numbers and decreased donor turnout, making it hard to keep up with the demand for blood products. When they give now, donors can ensure patients have access to lifesaving blood through the end of t...
