DECEMBER 2, 1998 The Whitehall Town Council vote on November 30 to direct the town attorney to challenge a Montana Attorney General opinion was apparently illegally conducted because the council failed to obtain a majority vote to approve the motion. The dilemma was this: the vote itself was on a matter dealing with conflict of interest, and three members of the council abstained from voting because they could have had a conflict of interest on the issue voted upon. Montana state law requires a...

Worry is an all-consuming black hole that drains your time, emotions, and physical well-being. Worry is insidious because you are so used to it that you aren’t aware of how often, or how readily, you worry. For some people, worry is a way of life. We grow up being taught, by example, to make worry a regular activity. We worry about what happened. We worry about what is happening now. We worry about what might happen. We worry about what others will do. We worry about what other people won’t do. We worry about just about everything. Worry bec...
I bet you are scratching your head thinking, where do I find a monkey in Montana? Well...about 15 years ago, I went to a pet store in a larger city up north, and there, in the back, they had monkeys for sale. I never even knew that monkeys could live in this kind of climate, with how cold it is, but there they were. For $300. I took a monkey home, thinking how much fun it was going to be. Sadly, it was January and the poor thing froze to death when my pick-up broke down and I had to walk five miles. Not wanting to see my money go completely to...
The Montana Supreme Court’s recent order upholding the Montana Department of Revenue’s calculation of the 95 school equalization mills provided a protective shield for residential property taxpayers and students educated in Montana’s public schools. The Court’s decision respected and preserved bipartisan decisions made by the 2023 Legislature estimating revenues and appropriating funds to fund Montana’s public schools. Some county officials erroneously asserted that levying 77.89 instead of 95 school equalization mills would have saved the...
