For many of us, exercising alone isn’t as enjoyable as doing it with others. For the past three months, community members have gathered at the Assembly of God Church in Whitehall to exercise together. For one hour, twice a week, you can find these fit folks moving around with dumbbells and ankle weights – doesn’t that sound fun? MSU Extension brought this strength training program to Whitehall after community members voiced interest in it, expanding upon the newly launched programs in Sheridan and Ennis. The class is open to all, there is no...

Floaters hoping for a Smith River permit can apply Jan. 2 through Feb. 15. However, a few changes are coming this year that applicants should be aware of. Celebrated for its spectacular scenery, remote location and excellent trout fishing, the Smith River is one of Montana’s most sought-after outdoor recreation experiences. Permits are required to float the 59-mile section of river between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge and are issued each year through a lottery. Parties of up to 15 people can float with one permit. A person applying for a Smith R...
Beginning this week, the Bear Identification (ID) test is available online only. Black bear hunters in Montana are required to pass the Bear ID test (distinguishing black bears vs. grizzly bears) to obtain a black bear license. Previously, hunters had two options to complete the Bear ID test – online or via a paper test available at regional offices. The paper test is no longer available, and hunters must now complete the test online. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks made the change to online only to streamline the licensing process. FWP encourag...
Sleeping less does more than just make us tired. It can undermine emotional functioning, decrease positive moods and put people at higher risk for anxiety symptoms, according to a study led by a Montana State University professor who synthesized more than 50 years of research on sleep deprivation and mood. “In our largely sleep-deprived society, quantifying the effects of sleep loss on emotion is critical for promoting psychological health,” said Cara Palmer, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology in MSU’s College of Letters and S...

Grilled cheese is a beloved comfort food that can be enjoyed any time of the day. Although there isn't much that needs to be added to cheese to make it delicious, the inclusion of tart strawberries and blackberries in this recipe titled The Sweet Sheep Grilled Cheese from The Reading Terminal Market¨ Cookbook (Camino Books) by Ann Hazan and Irina Smith pushes this sandwich over the edge of deliciousness. An additional cookie butter spread and chocolate chips make this grilled cheese much more de...

8 YEARS AGO - December, Part II: Another year is closing and a new century is only a couple of years away. 1897 was, for many, thankfully coming to an end. In Seattle, 2.74 inches of rain in twelve hours left rivers swollen. In the Yukon, men have been leaving in droves due to a lack of food and impending winter weather. At Mammoth up the South Boulder, Ed Kennedy, a crippled man, had enough of William Barclay’s abuse and threw a pick at Barclay, striking him in the head. Mr. Barclay would s...

Five members of the council - council member Ron Robertson abstained - voted to again direct Whitehall Town Attorney Jack Morris to petition the Montana Supreme Court to review an attorney general opinion that essentially held that it was "incompatible" for municipal employees...

My Perfect Christmas - a Holiday Poem My home will be perfect, and food will be grand, This year’s plans for Christmas are the best in the land. My tree will be pretty, the decorations all even, The day will be “A-1” you’d best be believing. The week before Christmas I looked at my lists, Turned my eyes up to Heaven and shook both my fists. My cards are not mailed, they’re not even stamped, My tree is now crooked, it’ll soon need revamped. My house is not clean, and the gifts are not wrapped, My patience and energy levels are zapped. “To...
