On a beautiful Montana morning, a crowd made their way to the Whitehall Cemetery for the annual Whitehall VFW Post #4603 and American Legion Post #14 Memorial Day Ceremony. Local Veteran Tom Harrington told the crowd that Memorial Day wasn’t about sales or barbecues, it has a much more important meaning. “Americans understand that freedom isn’t free and that eternal vigilance and decisive action are the price we must pay for liberty,” Harrington said. “We must always remember the ultimate...
The beginning words of a song written by Liberty Place musicians "Music takes me to a different state of mind. Makes me feel pumped, relaxed, helps me unwind." . . . . echoes the goal of the Liberty Place Musical Therapy Program. Three years ago Musical Therapist David Parker approached Liberty Place concerning a special Musical Therapy Program to which they agreed. Ann Geiger, the Executive Director, is excited about the program as she has a background in musical therapy also. This program incl...
I saw a really cute picture on Facebook. It was Kyle Glaus hanging onto a tree with his fiancé, Krista, pulling on his legs. The caption reads, “The Hunt is Over”. Their wedding plans are for later this summer. I have kidded Kyle about marrying an old, rich, widow. Krista is none of those, but she definitely is a ‘keeper’. Congratulations. Hey, Kyle, God says in Proverbs 18:22 “He who finds a wife, finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD”. The Armstrong ranch on Armstrong Road hosted its annual Armstrong picnic. The crowd includ...
Each year near Memorial Day fish are placed in the Rotary Club Fish Pond located in Legion Park. Last Friday morning, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Fish Naturalist Kerry Berger made a trip to fill the pond. Berger said she would be stocking the pond with 35 Westslope cutthroat trout from Washoe Park in Anaconda. Rotary Club member Erv Hedegaard said the fish will remain in the pond until after Labor Day. He added they will then drain the pond, fillet the fish and divide them up with most going...
The new signs in town herald the twenty-first season of the Jefferson Valley Museum. Since 1996 the historical building has shared the history of this area with the many visitors from the 50 States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Within these walls of one of the oldest buildings in Whitehall is held the story of the town, the valley and the people. These buildings and grounds were "rescued" by volunteers and are still lovingly maintained by volunteers. Even though the season is from Memorial Day...
Whitehall Elementary students wowed the crowds last Tuesday at their annual Spring Concert. The theme of the concert was "Play that Music". The K-5 students were under the director of Janet Heilig....
Nonie Sacry told me once “If you have too much to do today, be thankful, and pray for those who have nothing to do.” Good advice and these past few weeks, I should have been praying a whole lot!!! The Special Election on Thurs. will be an interesting day. I know, my life isn’t any busier than most this time of year - I just suffer from lack of focus. Every year the Cardwell students (or as they are often called in years gone by, scholars), have a Declamation Contest. This year it was held ‘on its own’ without being the end of the year, etc...
It was an evening of glitz and glamour with a bit of tap and ballet and hand stands, splits, back bends and somersaults thrown in. It was the "Dancing Through the Decades" Dance and Tumbling Recital held at the Star Theatre on Thursday, May 18th. The Christensen School of Dance presented their students in a high energy program that had the audience entranced. The majority of the young dancers not only took on the intricate steps of ballet but took on the challenge of tap dancing. If that wasn't...
The Library will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday May 29. In response to the young patron who asked me why we were closed on that day, here is the answer. Memorial Day came out of the horrific casualties the United States suffered on both sides during the Civil War. On May 5, 1868, General John Logan, a Union general, declared there would be a yearly observance to honor those who had died in the Civil War. The day was originally entitled Decoration Day and only celebrated in the northern states. The Southern states kept their own form of...
The cry went up "They're nine miles out!" A hum of enthusiasm grew from the townspeople who had gathered to welcome the over 100 motorcycle riders who were taking part in the 23rd annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride. The riders who hailed from California, Texas, New York, Iowa and Colorado among many other states began in Portland, Oregon and will end up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Friday. They ride with their North Carolina police escort and crew cars and trailers about 416 miles a day in order to...
For the past several years, the musical ensemble at Liberty Place has spent countless hours practicing for their performance at the annual Festival of Trees in Bozeman. Next Thursday, May 25 at the Star Theater, Liberty Place is presenting the "Lights On" performance that will feature songs written, arranged, and performed by residents of the non-profit organization that provides care and rehabilitation for...
Thanks to a donation from the Whitehall PTSA, local elementary students were able to spend time last week working with a large floor map of the Pacific Ocean. Whitehall Librarian Holly Harper and teachers in the building worked with students on a variety of activities on the 35' by 26' map that was placed on the basketball court in Tia Kober Gymnasium. Harper said the map will be at the school for two weeks, adding it is good for the students to be able to physically move around the map as well...
A trip of a lifetime! Kyra Armstrong's school, Montana Wilderness School of the Bible, scheduled a tour of Israel. She joined the 30 other folks and after flying into Tel Aviv, spent the following week in the land where Jesus lived. Problems kept them from Bethlehem, but two days in Jerusalem will not be forgotten. Kyra said without hesitation that her favorite place was the Garden of Gethsemane. The group spent time there reading their Bibles, praying and meditating on the Scripture. She said...

Whitehall resident and artist Michelle Tebay has a love for the land and the state of Montana. This is proudly reflected in her work. A juried member of the Pastel Society of America and the Oil Painters of America, Tebay is currently displaying her works at a special "Montana and Beyond" display through the end of June in the dining room at Boulder Hot Springs. At a special reception last Sunday, Tebay shared her happiness about the showcase. "It's an honor to be asked to display my work as a...
A display narrating the Irish struggle for independence and the support given by Ireland's "exiled children in America," is now available for viewing at the Whitehall Library. "Erin's Exiled Children: The Irish of America and the Making of Modern Ireland" was created in honor of the centennial of Ireland's Easter Rising in 1916 and documents the Irish struggle for independence and the role the Irish in America played in keeping their traditions alive. According to Whitehall Librarian Jeannie...
Had an occasion to visit Wagner’s Nursery in Butte and what an experience! When I need a ‘flower fix’ , that is the place to go. The flowers are so beautiful - and the fragrance, Wow! It was better than shopping for new clothes. Matthew 6:28 and 29 have it right. “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They neither toil nor spin, and yet I say unto you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of them.” News from the school is scant, but I was told that the garage sale was successful and they had lots of donations...

Members of the Whitehall High School choir and band continued to shine at last week’s State Music Festival in Missoula. School musical director Janet Heilig said they had eleven events at state, four of them receiving the top possible score of a superior rating, and the other seven receving excellent ratings. “They were terrific,” Heilig said. The Women’s Ensemble featuring Iris Heimberg, Bailee Hess, Rabeca Kopf, Madison Lombardi, Alycia Loomis, Alexys Mercer, Ann Russell, Monica Sepulveda and Rachel Smith received a superior rating. The Wom...

Since graduating from Whitehall High School in 1984, Clark Hays has traveled around the world, now finding himself settled in Portland. The co-author of four books in the "Cowboy and Vampire" series with his wife Kathleen McFall, and the soon to be released "Bonne and Clyde: Resurrection Road", Hays not only reflects back fondly on his time in Whitehall, he also uses it as an inspiration for his work. Hays remembers moving around a lot as a kid. His father, Hubert, was in the oilfield so that...

Welcome Home, Catherine! The Ledger will be filled with your journalistic writings, I’m sure. It looks like the Madison County precinct that usually is at the Cardwell School gym, will be moved to the Cardwell Pavilion for the May 25th election. The position to replace Ryan Zinke in the House of Representatives in Washington has three candidates to choose from. The polls will be open from noon until 8pm as usual. The Cardwell Pavilion is just east of the Cardwell Store where the soccer fields are. Winners at the Whitehall Pinochle Club i...
