  • Congress Should Stop Rewarding Pharma With Tax Breaks for Gouging Patients

    Terry Minow, Big Sky 55|May 26, 2021

Love them or hate them, most Americans pay their fair share of taxes into the government’s coffers as a basic duty. In return, we get roads, schools, law enforcement, health services, clean air and water and other public goods that benefit everyone. But for too long, the rules that apply to most of us have been shirked by the richest households and corporations--those who can afford to pay their fair share, but thanks to loopholes, lobbying and preferential treatment, seldom do. Every year, dozens of Fortune 500 corporations manage to avoid t...

  • Recipe of the Week: Barbecue Chipotle Burgers

    May 26, 2021

As the mercury rises, the opportunities to cook a greater number of meals on the grill increases. For many people, there's nothing like the smoke-kissed flavor of meats, poultry and vegetables seared over an open flame. Hamburgers are a grilling staple in many households. Burger flavors and toppings are only limited by a home cook's imagination. For those who may need a little burger inspiration, this recipe for Barbecue Chipotle Burgers courtesy of the Iowa Beef Council features a beer-based...

  • A Brief History of Memorial Day

    May 19, 2021

Every year, on the last Monday in May, Americans observe Memorial Day. Originally called “Decoration Day,” Memorial Day is a holiday to commemorate those who died in battle while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Historians traced the origin of Memorial Day back to the American Civil War. The end of fighting brought great relief and peace to many but was also a time of intense grief. • Ledger: Looking Back 25 Years - 5/16/1996

    Catherine Ellerton, Whitehall Ledger|May 19, 2021

MAY 16, 1996: The history it represents took 100 years to create, but the Whitehall Centennial Quilt took only about a decade. While that may seem like a long time to make one quilt, the reason for the delay is apparent from the intricacy of the quilt. Six years after Whitehall’s centennial, the quilt was presented to the Jefferson Valley Museum Monday to be exhibited when the museum opens May 25. Embedded in the blue of the Big Sky Country emblem is the Whitehall Centennial logo which honors the diverse lifestyles found in the Whitehall a...

Johnson's fish weighed in at 18.02 pounds on a certified scale, measured 32.25 inches in length, and 22 inches in girth. He caught the record-setting fish on a jig. • Recipe of the Week: Bacon Makes it Better in BLT Bites

    May 19, 2021

Some people may argue that bacon should be its own food group. Bacon has the potential to improve any recipe with it's salty, addictive flavor, but it is equally delicious all on its own. It's found in breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Those who have tried chocolate-covered bacon also may insist that bacon holds its own as a dessert. Bacon is a salt-cured pork product that is made from pork belly or less fatty back cuts. Just as there are many different ways to incorporate bacon into favorite...

  • This Week's "Change That Up" Tip...Choices

    May 19, 2021

Life is short. Youth is finite. You have every opportunity to make the most of the life you have right now. Your choices today will determine the number of regrets you will have in the next ten years. The most common regrets you have probably read about are: missed opportunities, not spending time more prudently, accomplishing more, not doing meaningful work, procrastinating, not forming better habits, not mastering another language or skill, getting into bad relationships, or making mistakes in a past relationship. Regrets suck. But today,...

  • Connecting Point: Celebrating Authentic Women

    Bill Lanes|May 12, 2021

Just last Sunday many of us celebrated Mother’s Day. It is one of those distinctions that contributes to our civilization. As a matter of fact, in America, Mother’s Day dates back about one hundred years and was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. Also, in the Western world, Mother’s Day contributed to holding society together dating back to the 12th century. You can include yours truly amongst those who believe it is essential for us to celebrate Mother’s Day. To all mothers: You are unique, because through you we all have life. Being...

May 1895 The following is taken as written from the May 3, 1895 Whitehall Zephyr. The accompanying photo is of an ad from the same edition. Charlie Wagonbreth is constructing a fine ice-box in his market. He calculates there will be "no flies on his meat" at any stage of the game. As soon, it is reported, as a suitable hall can be secured, three new lodges will be organized in Whitehall, Knights of Pythias, Free Masons and Odd Fellows. Luke Dear is up at Pipestone Springs for a time-that is for...
