Some of the best high school choir members in Southwest Montana came together last Tuesday at a special concert at Whitehall High School. Along with Whitehall, the Regional Honors Choir featured members from Manhattan, Three Forks, Twin Bridges and Sheridan. It’s Homecoming Week in Whitehall. The theme of the 2017 Whitehall High School Homecoming is “Montana Proud” and there are a variety of events are scheduled throughout the week. The popular annual parade will take place Friday, October 6 at 1 p.m. in Downtown Whitehall. Standing last Saturday inside of the barn that has been part of his family for over 100 years, Cardwell resident Bill Powell was flooded with memories of the building. It was like a bee hive during the work in progress at Powell’s Barn Raising. Items from the loft were being cleaned, windows were being restored to be authentic, various wood projects were being scraped in readiness for finishing, along with painting and nail pulling. A true gem of downtown Whitehall, the Star Theater has been an integral part of the community for decades. In October of 2016, the Jefferson Valley Community Foundation awarded five grants at a reception at the Borden's Building in Whitehall. Last week, JVCF board members were able to see the grants put to good use at a walk-through tour. The JVCF awarded five grants in 2016 for a total of $13,500. An enthusiastic group met to get the Cardwell 100th Anniversary celebration plans started. The Cardwell School has been reserved for August 4, 2018 to commemorate this milestone. With the date secured, the work finding former students and getting other arrangements made, will be the big push. Other volunteers are welcome to join the work. The stories held within the walls of the JV Museum were enhanced during the 2017 Season. Most recently a Broad Ax that had helped to build a barn at the 18 Mile in the early 1900s and once again in the 1930s helped to build a barn in Cardwell joined the many artifacts contained within this historic building. The Whitehall High School Booster Club has long been an integral part of the community, raising money for the betterment of Trojan athletics. This year, the club has decided to have a little fundraising with the "Kiss the Pig" contest taking place after the Homecoming game October 6 against Jefferson. The club has initiated the "Change For Fires" fundraiser for families in the Treasure State. Residents at Liberty Place were recently thinking of a way to help out the community, while at the same time looking to obtain funds so they could go out for pizza and several other outings. It was another successful year for the Whitehall Annual Softball Tournament. The event that took place in late August was able to give back to the Whitehall Food Pantry. Organizer Mikel Kelley said that heavy smoke led to the cancellation of several teams, but she had five die-hard teams that participated. On Labor Day, the small historic mining town of Mammoth rolled out its own brand of a "Rocky Mountain High" Music Festival. Nestled in the Tobacco Root Mountains, this year's festival was conceived and hosted by local residents, Dave and Marjorie Klem.
