Beginning May 15 and running through June 30, nonresident hunters can register their name to the Alternate’s List on MyFWP. Every year, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks gets several unused nonresident combination licenses (big game, general elk and general deer combination licenses) returned by customers. FWP resells these returned licenses through the Alternate’s List. The Alternate’s List is an option for nonresident hunters to express their interest in purchasing one of these returned licenses by registering their name to this listing. A hun...
The American Red Cross is responding to significantly more home fires in Montana this year than last and is encouraging families to sign up for free virtual home fire safety education that could save lives. The free training, offered over the phone or video call, takes only about 15 minutes and teaches families how to develop a plan for safely escaping their home during a fire, highlights the importance of smoke alarms and covers essential fire prevention tips. Families, on average, have only two minutes to safely get out of their home during...

Vegetables are an important component of a nutritious diet because they are full of vitamins and minerals. According to the online medical resource Healthline, vegetables also are loaded with antioxidants and other plant compounds that help fight free radicals that damage cells. Vegetable serving sizes typically range from 1/2 cup to 1 cup. The Mayo Clinic and other health organizations recommend three to four servings of vegetables per day. One way to ensure that vegetables are a primary part...
When you have a goal -- whether it’s starting a business, getting in better shape or traveling the world -- it’s easy to look at someone who’s already successful in that domain and then trying to reverse engineer their strategy. While that can be useful, one thing that you have to realize is that the habits and strategies that successful people are using today are probably not the same ones they were using when they began their journey. What is optimal for them right now isn’t necessarily needed for you to get started. There is a differe...
Pamala (pronounced Paw-Maul-Uhh) Bowen was born in Blackfoot Idaho to hardworking parents. She was born a high-functioning autistic child but she has never let anything stop her. Her family moved to Idaho Falls and lived there throughout her school years. When she turned thirteen she became terribly ill. She found out when she was fourteen that she had cancer. She went through emergency surgery and appreciated the world more. She joined her high school cheer squad and was well-regarded by her pe...
Like many businesses and organizations, we had to pivot when COVID hit last year. Through our organization We Are HER, several volunteers and I had planned a five-day retreat in Paradise Valley for 15 survivors to attend. The point of the retreat? To help survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault find healing through connection, story sharing, and education about trauma. One week before we selected the 15 survivors who would be travelling to Montana to attend our retreat, the news of the...
Without volunteers to rely on, it is hard for me to imagine how Jefferson County Health Department would have fulfilled its many responsibilities this year. We have been assisted by mask makers, contact tracers, telephone answers and paper filers. Volunteers have worked from home, come to our office and responded to our vaccination clinics. They have entered data, directed traffic and administered vaccinations. Their service to us and our residents has made a positive impact on our community....
It’s quite common for people to say, “I’m a good person. I do good things for others. I volunteer a lot.” I’ve heard a version of the following a time or two, “I love God, go to church and say my prayers.” Another candid conversation for refreshment of great value for all American adults concerns the subject of salvation. While it might be somewhat true “good people” exist, we need to be careful about concluding that “being good” somehow equates to salvation. This is a heady subject, and it is part of my writing and preaching for the next coupl...

Teacher appreciation week is the first week of May, and this year more than ever, I am thankful for the excellent staff I work with. I have been an educator for 21 years, and the past 13 months, beyond a doubt, were the most challenging of my career. I know the teachers felt the brunt of the changes, even more than I did. When schools closed abruptly last March, teachers were obliged to speedily reinvent their craft to supply students with digital instruction. The Whitehall teachers rose to the...

The search for a safe, stimulating space for your child while they are out of school can be very stressful. Many parents are all too familiar with the uncertainty of finding care for school-age children this year as we face nontraditional school hours, and limited availability. As the school year ends, the new task of finding full-time, summer care can be a whole new challenge. Luckily, a new online resource guide is available to make the search a little easier! The purpose of OutOfSchoolMT.org is to connect families to programs who are...
Jefferson Valley EMS & Rescue recently purchased two tracked stair chairs for carrying patients down flights of stairs. Funds for the purchase were a combination of a $2000 grant from Northwest Farm Credit Services and $1000 gift from Sandy Kraha. Special thanks go to Sandy Carey for assisting with the writing of the NW Farm Credit Services grant. The stair chairs keep patients and care providers safer than other means of carrying patients down stairs. The NWFCS award was presented prior to the...
I had some fantastic news this week! The Whitehall Community Library has been chosen as one of five libraries to participate in the Entrepreneurial Support in the Library Small Cohort! This means that the Library will become a resource center for area businesses as well as those who are thinking about beginning a business of their own. I will take five weeks of classes to learn and understand the materials we will be providing to the community, as well as online discussions with the Montana State Library and Accelerate Montana Rural Innovation...
APRIL 18, 1996 More than two dozen Whitehall area residents will mount up Wednesday, April 24, for Donkey Basketball sponsored by the W-Club. The 7 p.m. event should provide plenty of laughs as four teams of students, teachers and others try to win at hoops from the backs of donkeys amid as many “oops” as “hoops.” In an effort to raise public awareness and understanding of county government, Jefferson County officials have planned a schedule of activities in observance of National County Government Week, April 21 – 27. “This special wee...
What if you could drastically reduce the risk of heart disease -- and dying from cardiovascular disease -- by making one simple switch? It’s not just simple, in fact, it’s completely free. And we’re talking about dramatically tipping the odds in your favor -- even better than what typical heart medications can do. Would that be something that you’re interested in? We thought so. But before we unveil that simple switch, let’s put things into proper perspective. Heart disease is the top killer in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease C...
The Jefferson County Health Department (JCHD) has paused the use of the Johnson & Johnson’s single-does COVID-19 vaccine based on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation. The two federal agencies recommended the pause after six women between the ages of 18 and 48 developed an extremely rare type of blood clot after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. With 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine administered in the United States, the decision to pause was made o...

Misinformation about NorthWestern Energy’s potential interest in acquiring additional power from the Colstrip Power Plant is undermining the opportunity for a productive discussion and misleading the public about the future of this valuable Montana resource. Opponents of coal generation are using Senate Bill 379, legislation intended to facilitate continued operation of the Colstrip Power Plant, to spread a false narrative about Colstrip and NorthWestern Energy. To be clear, NorthWestern Energy would only consider acquiring enough additional cr...

Gluten-free diets are a necessity for people who have Celiac's Disease, a condition that causes an immune reaction in the small intestine from eating gluten. This reaction causes damage to the small intestines that can lead to pain and other symptoms. Going gluten-free also is a choice for people who experience other reactions to eating gluten products that are not related to Celiac's, or have been instructed to do so on the advice of their nutritionists or doctors. It used to be that...
