Grillmasters insist that just about everything tastes a little better when cooked over a flame. Even though grilling often is reserved for lunch or dinner, there's something to be said about preparing breakfast on those hot grates as well. According to Andrew Schloss and David Joachim, authors of the cookbook "Mastering the Grill: The Owner's Manual for Outdoor Cooking" (Chronicle Books), there's reckless abandon involved in standing by an open fire in a robe preparing breakfast. It can turn a...

To register, hunters can log into their MyFWP account or click “look up draw results, register for lists” within the menu. Then select a preferred hunting dis...
"It's like having gasoline out there," said Brian Steinhardt, forest fire zone manager for Prescott and Coconino national forests in Arizona, in a recent AP story about the increasingly fire-prone West. Now something else is happening - and at the worst possible time. Federal firefighters are leaving the workforce and taking their training and experience with them. The inability of federal agencies to offer competitive pay and benefits is creating hundreds of wildland firefighting vacancies....
The rights to hunt, fish, and access our public lands are engrained in Montana’s Constitution, our state’s heritage, and in the hearts and minds of the people you elect to represent you in Helena. Republican legislators include landowners, avid hunters, fishermen and women, competitive shooters, hikers, ATV riders, boaters, skiers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all types. Montana’s outdoor heritage is our way of life and policies that impact the outdoor experience are near and dear to our hearts. Montana would not be Montana without the abili...

“People don’t respond to what you say or do; people respond to how you make them FEEL. And one of the best ways to make someone FEEL CONNECTED with you is to make them feel understood and listened to.” - Ed Mylett Being a good listener can help you in every aspect of your life -- with friends and family to colleagues and clients at work. For a number of reasons, though, listening has become a lost art, and chances are, you’ve been on both sides of distracted listening…checking your phone or email…multitasking…thinking about the next thing on...
Editor's Note: This year the Whitehall School District is losing several well-known and loved staff. For the next few weeks the Name to a Face column will be dedicated to those who will no longer be gracing the hallways of WHS/WMS/WES next semester. We wish them all the best in their retirement! Holly Harper was born in Seattle, where she received her early education and excelled in many school activities. She loved softball, track, basketball, tennis, band, and choir. Not long after high...

I have been entertaining the question: What will the church be? History says the church in the world builds life. “You cannot pray at home, like you can at church, where there is a great multitude; where exclamations are cried out to God as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the unions of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, and the prayers of priests,” (John Chrysostom). It is so in America I would more than argue. Our early foundations are directly tied to churches. Now nearly 250 years later we are see...
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved aducanumab (Biogen/Eisai) to treat Alzheimer’s disease. This is the first drug that slows Alzheimer’s disease. And, this is the beginning of a completely new future for Alzheimer’s treatments. This is a new type of Alzheimer’s treatment; it addresses the disease in a way that has never been done before, compared to currently approved drugs. Alzheimer’s — a progressive, degenerative and fatal brain disease — is the most common cause of dementia. For Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figur...
Whitehall resident Shirley Baustian is known for her friendly smile and wonderful personality - but did you know she is an accomplished children's book author as well as illustrator? Her children's book series "Good Friends," which features a moose and his mouse friend, was spawned from a misunderstanding of language. "We were in Sweden when a friend of mine said, looking way off in the distance, 'Oh!! Look!! A mouse just went by!' and I laughed because I was amazed by how great his eye sight...
Spending time outdoors around water and in swimming pools is a great way to stay active and healthy during summer in Montana. The Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), along with local health authorities, want to remind Montanans to stay safe while having fun in the water over the coming months, and to be aware of the related health and safety risks. Over the past 10 years, there have been an average of 20 unintentional drowning deaths per year in Montana. Almost 50% of the drownings occurred in natural water, while others occ...

JUNE 6, 1996 Montana may be the “Last of the Big Time Splendors” and Butte may be the “Can-Do City” but how does one identify Jefferson County? That’s exactly the question people often ask, according to the Jefferson County Economic Development Task Force. And that’s exactly the question the group hopes to answer through the “Jefferson County Official Slogan Contest.” The purpose of the contest is to develop a slogan line that identifies a common, unique characteristic about Jefferson County in order to promote the county for tourism and busine...
The past few weeks have allowed me some time for reflection on the past year. Here is no doubt this has been a difficult year. Our lives and routines have been disrupted. We have been pushed outside our comfort zones and have faced the fragility of life. As a society I am hearing more and more that we want to “go back to normal.” I have been thinking about what that normal is going to look like. I often joke that at our house “normal” is a dryer cycle. Maya Angelou has said, “If you’re always tr...
Whether referred to as companion animals, service animals or simply as pets, they play an important part in the lives of many Montanans. Owners can use estate planning tools to ensure their pets continue to receive proper care if the owner becomes incapacitated or dies. In Montana, a pet is “any domesticated animal normally maintained in or near the household of its owner.” A pet is tangible personal property, like guns, cars, or jewelry. When a pet owner dies, pets pass to beneficiaries by provisions in an owner’s will, by directives in an ow...
