Melting snow and rain have left soils in the higher country saturated, and the Forest Service and leaders of off-road vehicle groups are asking the public for help to prevent damaging this basic natural resource. Debbie Austin, Forest Supervisor, Beaverhead/Deerlodge National Forest urged everyone going into the mountains to take some simple precautions. “First, avoid meadows, espec...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Grilled Stuffed French Toast

    Jun 16, 2021

Grillmasters insist that just about everything tastes a little better when cooked over a flame. Even though grilling often is reserved for lunch or dinner, there's something to be said about preparing breakfast on those hot grates as well. According to Andrew Schloss and David Joachim, authors of the cookbook "Mastering the Grill: The Owner's Manual for Outdoor Cooking" (Chronicle Books), there's reckless abandon involved in standing by an open fire in a robe preparing breakfast. It can turn a...

  • What Do We Owe Wildland Firefighters?

Jonathon Golden, Writers on the Range|Jun 16, 2021

"It's like having gasoline out there," said Brian Steinhardt, forest fire zone manager for Prescott and Coconino national forests in Arizona, in a recent AP story about the increasingly fire-prone West. Now something else is happening - and at the worst possible time. Federal firefighters are leaving the workforce and taking their training and experience with them. The inability of federal agencies to offer competitive pay and benefits is creating hundreds of wildland firefighting vacancies....

  • This Week's "Change That Up" Tip...Becoming a Listener

    Jun 16, 2021

“People don’t respond to what you say or do; people respond to how you make them FEEL. And one of the best ways to make someone FEEL CONNECTED with you is to make them feel understood and listened to.” - Ed Mylett Being a good listener can help you in every aspect of your life -- with friends and family to colleagues and clients at work. For a number of reasons, though, listening has become a lost art, and chances are, you’ve been on both sides of distracted listening…checking your phone or email…multitasking…thinking about the next thing on...

  • Connecting Point: More Than a Member

    Bill Lanes|Jun 9, 2021

I have been entertaining the question: What will the church be? History says the church in the world builds life. “You cannot pray at home, like you can at church, where there is a great multitude; where exclamations are cried out to God as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the unions of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, and the prayers of priests,” (John Chrysostom). It is so in America I would more than argue. Our early foundations are directly tied to churches. Now nearly 250 years later we are see...

  • Baustian's "Good Friends" Series Available

    Elizabeth Pullman, Whitehall Ledger|Jun 9, 2021

Whitehall resident Shirley Baustian is known for her friendly smile and wonderful personality - but did you know she is an accomplished children's book author as well as illustrator? Her children's book series "Good Friends," which features a moose and his mouse friend, was spawned from a misunderstanding of language. "We were in Sweden when a friend of mine said, looking way off in the distance, 'Oh!! Look!! A mouse just went by!' and I laughed because I was amazed by how great his eye sight...
