Recent and current cold temperatures across the state have resulted in higher-than-expected energy bills for many Montana residents. Increased utility company operating expenses for some utilities, including local property tax increases which went into effect January 1, may have also contributed to a recent surge in the prices customers are seeing on their bills. To reduce energy costs, the Montana Public Service Commission encourages consumers to take steps to conserve energy and protect their homes against the cold. The following energy-savin...
Digital technology has caused the biggest changes to teenage life in many decades. Typical American teenagers spend about half of their waking hours on their smartphones. They are on the phones when they are alone at home and when they are hanging out with friends. When I compare my own teenage years in the 1980s with those of my parents in the 1950s and ’60s, I realize how much more rapidly habits have changed in the past 15 years than in the previous 50 years. My teenage experiences and those of my parents weren’t all that different. We tal...
Jackalopes are one of the hardest animals to find, but there is a big population in Whitehall. Jackalopes live in the same areas as antelopes but act like gophers. The reason why you don't see them is that jackalopes only have their antlers two months out of the year. In January and December, jackalopes grow antlers and start to fight over the females. As they fight, their antlers fall off and the one who has the antlers left gets the best female for breeding. The other 10 months of the year the jackalopes just look like skinny rabbits and that...

At Whitehall Elementary School we have a March Madness Money War. This is a great fundraiser we do for the PTSA. Grades K-5 compete on which grade will raise the most change to win, without being sabotaged by other grades. Coins add to their grade's total amount, while dollar bills from opposing grades subtract from their total, creating a war. It's all very fun and the winners will be announced at the end of March. The winning grade will receive a pizza party and extra recess. How can you help? The Whitehall PTSA is seeking businesses that...
The Whitehall Sharing Garden, fondly referred to as Dan's Garden in honor of one of its founders, the late Dan Volz, is beginning its planning for the upcoming season. There will be a planning meeting on Monday, February 27 to decide how much of a garden to plant this summer. Many community members have enjoyed working there in the past, and have benefitted from the produce. Come to this meeting if you would like to be involved in planting or weeding or harvesting. The meeting will be held at...
The second half of February 1897 had plenty of news events. National headlines in Whitehall's Jefferson Valley Zephyr included turmoil in the senate and a bill in the house to appropriate money for the armor plating of war vessels; a lavish inauguration was being planned for McKinley; a bank failure in Idaho hit close to home; and proclamations made by President Cleveland set aside seven areas of land referred to as forest reservations including areas in the Flathead, Lewis and Clark forest,...

The Montana Healthcare Foundation released its third annual report on the Montana Medicaid program and its impact on the state’s budget, economy, and health. The report found that Medicaid expansion enrollees had fewer visits to the ER each year they were enrolled in Medicaid. This year’s analysis also showed that with these better health outcomes, the healthcare costs for expansion enrollees declined each year they had coverage – and perhaps more importantly, how healthcare spending patterns for enrollees changed over time. “Medicaid coverag...
Together with Charlie Brereton, director of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS), Governor Greg Gianforte announced a $2.1 million investment to increase access to universal screening for mental health and substance use issues among young Montanans. “No young Montanan struggling with their mental health is alone,” Governor Gianforte said. “By investing in voluntary universal mental health screening in our schools, we can get young Montanans the help they need, reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and build...

Rocky Mountain Bank wants to help you keep your accounts safe by keeping you informed of current scams. There is a current fraud trend where scammers pose as Rocky Mountain Bank using our phone numbers. The caller then asks the customer to verify a fake transaction and provide their debit card number. In further conversation, the caller then obtains online banking credentials and gains remote access to the online banking account. Spoofing and bank impersonation scams impact many banks across the US, and we have received reports of bad actors...
Breakfast is often described as the most important meal of the day. After a period of sleep when nothing is consumed, breakfast does just what its name implies: breaks the fast. While many people are content to grab something fast from the pantry each morning, every now and again a hot breakfast can really hit the spot. Whether feeding a family or a crowd, this Egg in a Hole Bagel recipe can be prepared quickly and assembled on one baking sheet. Try this eggceptional meal, courtesy of The Incred...

It can be all too easy, especially when we aren’t feeling well, to harbor negative beliefs, thoughts, and emotions about our bodies. We may feel frustrated, betrayed, hopeless, angry, or even hateful about what we are physically experiencing. We wonder what we did to deserve this, what we did wrong, or why our body can’t just cooperate and do what it’s supposed to. I used to think many of these things myself, and I’ve heard them from many others as well! But as I’ve studied, traveled the path...
