  • Watch Out for New Vaccine Survey Scams

    Cassidy Belus, Missoula Aging Services|Mar 17, 2021

We have received reports of a new COVID-19 vaccine email scam where people are asked to complete a survey. They offer a free reward but ask people to pay a nominal fee "to cover shipping". Survey scams like this are a creative way to steal your identity or money. Many survey scams offer a reward and give you a limited time to respond if you want to take the survey. A legitimate survey would not assign a time limit, nor would they ask for your credit card or bank account to pay for a reward....

  • Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Release New Fatal Injury Data

    Mar 17, 2021

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new fatal injury data for Montana. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 12-18 (middle and high school youth). In fact, we lose a young person (ages 10–24) every 7.02 days on an average to this silent epidemic of youth suicide. According to a 2019 survey conducted by the CDC, 23.4% of the High School Youth said that they had “seriously considered suicide within the last 12 months.” That being said, suicide is one of the leading causes of PREVENTABLE death...

  • Recipe of the Week: Triple Chocolate Muffins

    Mar 17, 2021

'Tis the season for frost and snow (but spring is on the way!), which means coming downstairs in the morning to a chilly home. One way to rally the troops out of bed when it's cold and snowy is to reward family with a warm breakfast. Muffins are a go-to choice for a quick bite, and homemade muffins served right out of the oven can be just what's needed on blustery days. This recipe for "Triple Chocolate Muffins" from "Chocolate" (Parragon Book Service), by the editors of the Love Food series, im...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Spicy Oven-Fried Cod Fillets

    Mar 12, 2021

When the weather begins to warm, home cooks start migrating from the heartier soups, stews, and casseroles popular in winter to something lighter. Seafood is an option families can turn to that is both high in protein and leaner than other dinnertime staples. Cod is a popular saltwater fish with firm meat that is mild in flavor. It may hold up better than other white fish in different meals, like a fish fry. This recipe for "Spicy Oven-Fried Cod Fillets" (The Pampered Chef®) from The...

  • Our Town 100 Years Ago...March Part I

    ARLENE WEBER, Jefferson Valley Museum|Mar 12, 2021

In March 1899, there was plenty of news to report from around the world and here in the valley. Fighting was ongoing in the Philippines, and a front-page story made it clear that the government there was not fond of the U. S. forces. Our troops in Havana, Cuba, were fighting a typhoid fever outbreak that was not helped by the primitive sewage systems. A young man with the Northern Pacific in Helena chose suicide as the way to get out of his marriage. Montana Governor Smith vetoed a bill that wou...

  • Between the Stacks: Week of 3/12

    JEANNIE FERRISS, Whitehall Community Library|Mar 12, 2021

In 1992, Queen Elizabeth II called the year her Annus Horribilis, or horrible year. While we haven't had a whole year of craziness, the last two weeks have certainly qualified for the name. Last week and this week, we have had all four staff out at some time during the week, a family crisis, and a case of influenza A. Thanks to our amazing volunteers and hard-working staff, the library did not have to close a single day and only missed one program. Speaking of programs, next week is full with...

  • Connecting Point: When the Bottom Falls Out

    Bill Lanes|Mar 10, 2021

“The pursuit of happiness,” Thomas Jefferson equated with “Life and Liberty,” when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. More than a century later, from 1930 until 1940, America and the world strained under the greatest decade of economic disaster in history. Then, WWII brought the plight of war across the globe. Since then, Americans have experienced wealth untold from that generation to this. But, does the accumulation of possessions or its allure set us up for a great fall? I believe so. It is true that the recent decade has witness...

  • The "Woke Cancel Culture" Racism, and Me

    Jim Buterbaugh, Op-Ed Writer|Mar 10, 2021

This is not going to be sugar coated for the sake of the "woke". Growing up through the 60s and 70s, I have seen the struggles of what being a different color means. I witnessed what being of a different sexual orientation created. This was a time when real 'woke' people were working to rid our nation of the ugliness of racism. A time where people realized that being female didn't solely mean that you had to get married, have kids and meet the hubby at the door with his pipe, a drink, and his...

All you need to do is stop by and fill out a five-minute survey and claim this bag full of fun. This is a chance for parents of preschoolers through elementary age children to test a series of games for P...

    Mar 10, 2021

  • Our Town 100+ Years Ago

    Arlene Weber, Jefferson Valley Museum|Mar 10, 2021

March 1, 1895 Journalism in 1895 had a much different tone than today. This first section is as written from the March 1, 1895 Jefferson Valley Zephyr. The advertisement is also from that edition. In less than one month more than ONE THOUSAND MEN will be employed in digging the great ditch for the Parrot smelting company, besides hundreds more in railroad and smelter construction. This is enough, without additional details, to account for anticipated lively times in and about Whitehall soon....

  • Pet of the Week: Leinardo

    Mar 10, 2021

Purowdy! I was found as a stray, might have been abandoned but I can't tell them. Anyway, I've been tested and am negative for FIV/FeLV, UTD on my vaccinations, and am now neutered. I'm housetrained and learning how to play. I like to be petted but only if you don't make fast moves and loud noises. I was really frightened when I came in and really sick, but I'm a healthy happy guy now thanks to a great vet and good care. Purrease call Misty at (406)439-1405 and ask for me. Gratefully,...
