There's no denying the appeal of dairy in home cooking. Dairy helps make foods silky, creamy and more satisfying. Cheeses in particular can make meals more rich and more flavorful, so much so that they can be truly addictive. Layering cheesy goodness can set any meal apart. That's just what happens with "Cheesy Chicken Tortellini Bake" from The Pampered Chef Stoneware Inspirations (The Pampered Chef Ltd.) by The Pampered Chef Test Kitchens. Freshly cooked chicken and homemade tortellini can be...

Promoting health and wellness are the pieces of my job that are closest to my heart. Creating opportunities for people to have an awareness of and make choices that improves their overall quality of life brings great satisfaction. I view wellness as a spectrum. For each of us, throughout our lives, we can move on that spectrum. There are times when we are more, or less, physically, emotionally or mentally well. Well-being integrates both physical and mental health in preventing disease and promo...

MAY 2, 1996 What should Whitehall be in the year 2010? What can Whitehall residents do to guide the community in that direction and steer clear of undesirable changes? Those questions are the focus of a project called Vision 2010 which has been underway for several months and is about to result in some concrete plans. On Monday, May 6, Whitehall residents will get their first glimpse of architectural plans developed after a series of public meetings. The plans, created by Montana State University architectural students, provide visual and...
May is traditionally the Library’s month to prepare for Summer Reading. We will have many of our regular programs but this is the transition for staff from regular programs to all of the wonderful things we have planned for teens, children, preschoolers, and adults. May calendars are out and available at the front desk. Our Government 101 programs will conclude on Wednesday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. with our own Mary the Mayor Janacaro-Hensleigh. She will be discussing the different responsibilities she carries as the mayor of Whitehall, as well a...

Osprey nests can cause power outages and even fires, and their proximity to energized equipment puts the birds at risk of electrocution. NorthWestern Energy has installed hundreds of platforms to maintain service reliability and to provide a safe place for ospreys to raise their offspring. Visitors who join this guided hike can learn about plants on the Greer Gulch Trail, one of the most biodiverse and scenic areas of the park. Beginning at the upper picnic area, the hike will last about one and a half to two hours and traverse 2 miles of trail, including some steep inclines, sunny...
Cinco de Mayo celebrates the date of the Mexican army's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Though it is considered a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United States are significant. The holiday has now become a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. However, even people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico enjoy Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Some Cinco de Mayo...
Want to know the key to achieving your dreams and goals and realizing a true life of significance? Altering your beliefs about yourself. As motivational speaker Ed Mylett so perfectly sums up, there’s a governor on our lives, and it’s our identity -- what we think we’re worth; what we think we deserve. A good person in any endeavor will only take what he thinks he deserves. In other words, a good person will not take more from the table of life than what he thinks he’s worth. And that’s where our self-imposed governor on our identity comes int...
LaDonna Knox was born in Midvale, Utah, near Salt Lake City; where she lived until about a year ago. After attending Midvale Elementary and Hillcrest High School, she worked for a medical surgeries kit making company, before eventually deciding to pursue a degree in Administrative Assistance. She was a secretary for several years before switching up the pace and becoming an HR Director at a glass company, where she presided for 15 years. In 2006, when the economy was struggling, the glass...
The Jefferson Valley Hospice, a wonderful organization based in Whitehall, has been active in our community since March of 1983. It all started with a hospice training course where thirty-two people signed up, which was supplied by the Highlands Office and was the initial contact for the start of the operation. The state licensed the group in 1984. Out of the 32 original trainees, fifteen remain on board. Some of the original members included: Jackie Uivary, Dr. Sacry, Duane Scott, Brooke Connor...
Vaccination is very much on my mind. Jefferson County Health has been actively administering COVID-19 vaccinations for the past three and a half months. We have participated in training to store, handle and administer the vaccines. Scheduled appointments, provided education, set up clinics and administered doses. However, this is not the only vaccination effort I have been thinking about. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused barriers for some individuals in receiving preventative health care....
Are you tired of political bantering? It is incredibly complex. But, does it need to be? Every issue seems to be politicized, medicine, immigration, the environment, social justice, even sports. During the 2021 NCAA tournament, commentator Charles Barkley said, “I think most white and black people are great. I really believe that in my heart. But I think our system is set up where our politicians, whether they are Republican or Democrat, are designed to make us not like each other so they can keep their grasp of money and power. They divide and...

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and contracting partners across Montana are observing National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) the week of April 26-30. This year’s theme is “Drive Safe. Work Safe. Save Lives.” NWZAW is in its 21st year and was launched as a public awareness campaign to help the traveling public understand the vital role they play in keeping motorists and roadway workers safe. During the 2020 construction season, Montana experienced 175 work zone crashes and 61 of those crashes occurred in active work zones...
Greetings, Trojan Community! Do I dare say that after the recent rains we are now finally done with winter and snow? I know 215 elementary students who are almost unanimously ready for the sun to start shining on a regular basis. Though we all know the weather can sometimes put us into a lethargic mood, I think it is very important to put into perspective where we have been in the past year and, perhaps more importantly, where we are planning to go in the next. A year ago this weekend, I was edi...
April 1921 Part 2: The following is taken as written in April editions of the 1895 Whitehall Zephyr. A petition has been circulated in Boulder and extensively signed, praying for a direct mail service between here and the county seat. As it is now it takes two days to send a letter 35 miles by railroad. A circus procession, if a good one, is often an amusing sight, but never half so interesting as the procession of ore teams to be seen daily on our streets from the Aurora, Broadway and High...
How often does a barbershop quartet stroll through Whitehall these days? Whitehall area residents will have a chance to enjoy the four-part harmonies at an April 27 concert while also raising money for the local school music program. “The Chord Rustlers,” a group of 30 barbershop quartet singers from Bozeman, will present “Stepping Out with a Song” along with members of the Whitehall High School Concert Choir on Saturday, April 27 at 7 p.m. “The Chord Rustlers” will present a variety of music from Western cowboy songs to Southern ballads. Th...
This week the Government 101 program will explore the differences and responsibilities of the Jefferson County Library Board and the Friends of the Whitehall Community Library Steering Committee. Diane Ward and Vaia Errett will be representing the Library Board, while Lorie Steerman and John Moulton will be here for the Friends Steering Committee. They serve different functions for the Whitehall Library but both are essential to the Library being able to provide the many services available to the public. The program will be at 6:30 p.m. on...

The Cinnabar Foundation, Montana’s conservation fund, has hired a longtime conservation professional, Caroline Byrd, as its next executive director. Byrd will begin her new position on July 1 after spending time with the retiring ED, Gary Wolfe, to assure a smooth and successful transition. Byrd’s career in conservation has spanned more than 35 years and has included many overlapping connections with the Cinnabar Foundation, a private independent foundation that supports conservation partners working to conserve, preserve and restore this regio...
