  • JeffCo Health Department Update: 6/9/2021

Pam Hanna RN, Jefferson County Public Health Supervisor|Jun 9, 2021

The past few weeks have allowed me some time for reflection on the past year. Here is no doubt this has been a difficult year. Our lives and routines have been disrupted. We have been pushed outside our comfort zones and have faced the fragility of life. As a society I am hearing more and more that we want to “go back to normal.” I have been thinking about what that normal is going to look like. I often joke that at our house “normal” is a dryer cycle. Maya Angelou has said, “If you’re always tr...

  • Estate Planning For Pets

    Jun 9, 2021

Whether referred to as companion animals, service animals or simply as pets, they play an important part in the lives of many Montanans. Owners can use estate planning tools to ensure their pets continue to receive proper care if the owner becomes incapacitated or dies. In Montana, a pet is “any domesticated animal normally maintained in or near the household of its owner.” A pet is tangible personal property, like guns, cars, or jewelry. When a pet owner dies, pets pass to beneficiaries by provisions in an owner’s will, by directives in an ow...

  • Don't Bet Against Redband Rainbow Trout

BRIAN SEXTON, Writers on the Range|Jun 9, 2021

I love fish — the way they look, the way they fry up, the secret lives they live under the water. And of all the fish in the sea, river or lake, I most prize those that descended from the great oceangoing salmonids, trout and char. For me, the king of them all is the Great Basin redband rainbow. It’s not because they always grow to enormous size (some do) or that they’re feistier than some of their cousins (many are). It is because they are the ultimate survivors. They’re underdogs, plucky heroes surviving on sheer force of will. Due to thei...

  • This Week's "Change That Up" Tip...Sleep in Cooler Bedroom

    Jun 9, 2021

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the optimal temperature for sleep is between 65 – 67 degrees Fahrenheit (F). The body naturally decreases temperature to initiate sleep, and sleeping in a room that’s set at a cooler temperature can help facilitate this process. Interestingly, research suggests that some instances of insomnia may be related to poor body temperature regulation. In addition to optimizing sleep, new research also shows that sleeping in a cooler bedroom may also have a positive impact on metabolism and metabolic hea...

  • Recipe of the Week: Classic Creamy Coleslaw

    Jun 2, 2021

Chicken drumsticks or angus beef burgers may be the stars of summertime grilling, but classic side dishes can enhance any meal. Coleslaw completes the deli salads trifecta alongside macaroni salad and potato salad. Coleslaw is often served at summer picnics and barbecues, and it is at home on the side of sandwiches or even on top. Coleslaw can dress up Reubens or even replace sauerkraut on frankfurters. It's convenient to pick up premade coleslaw at the deli counter, but it's also easy to make...
