MAY 16, 1996: The history it represents took 100 years to create, but the Whitehall Centennial Quilt took only about a decade. While that may seem like a long time to make one quilt, the reason for the delay is apparent from the intricacy of the quilt. Six years after Whitehall’s centennial, the quilt was presented to the Jefferson Valley Museum Monday to be exhibited when the museum opens May 25. Embedded in the blue of the Big Sky Country emblem is the Whitehall Centennial logo which honors the diverse lifestyles found in the Whitehall a...

Montana anglers have landed six new state record fish since last August. On May 10, Trevor Johnson of Helena added a seventh whopper to that list when he reeled in a nearly 3-foot-long walleye from Holter Lake near Helena. Johnson's fish weighed in at 18.02 pounds on a certified scale, measured 32.25 inches in length, and 22 inches in girth. He caught the record-setting fish on a jig. The previous state walleye record was set in 2007 with a 17.75-pound fish from Tiber Reservoir. Other recent...
Some people may argue that bacon should be its own food group. Bacon has the potential to improve any recipe with it's salty, addictive flavor, but it is equally delicious all on its own. It's found in breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Those who have tried chocolate-covered bacon also may insist that bacon holds its own as a dessert. Bacon is a salt-cured pork product that is made from pork belly or less fatty back cuts. Just as there are many different ways to incorporate bacon into favorite...
Life is short. Youth is finite. You have every opportunity to make the most of the life you have right now. Your choices today will determine the number of regrets you will have in the next ten years. The most common regrets you have probably read about are: missed opportunities, not spending time more prudently, accomplishing more, not doing meaningful work, procrastinating, not forming better habits, not mastering another language or skill, getting into bad relationships, or making mistakes in a past relationship. Regrets suck. But today,...
JAMMING OUT: Whitehall native Sean Wisner (right) performed several original songs with accompaniment from John Willard (middle) and Demetrius Fassas (left) on standup bass. The next Beats & Eats will be at the Main Street Green (weather permitting) on June 26. FLOORING THE CROWD: Gabriel Popalis absolutely amazed the crowd with his rendition of Fly Me To The Moon. Here he is accompanied by Jessica Jane Hegg on a Bruno Mars tune....
Just last Sunday many of us celebrated Mother’s Day. It is one of those distinctions that contributes to our civilization. As a matter of fact, in America, Mother’s Day dates back about one hundred years and was signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. Also, in the Western world, Mother’s Day contributed to holding society together dating back to the 12th century. You can include yours truly amongst those who believe it is essential for us to celebrate Mother’s Day. To all mothers: You are unique, because through you we all have life. Being...

Each year, the Silver Bow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, sponsors a contest among local high schools to name DAR Good Citizens. Each pa...
May 1895 The following is taken as written from the May 3, 1895 Whitehall Zephyr. The accompanying photo is of an ad from the same edition. Charlie Wagonbreth is constructing a fine ice-box in his market. He calculates there will be "no flies on his meat" at any stage of the game. As soon, it is reported, as a suitable hall can be secured, three new lodges will be organized in Whitehall, Knights of Pythias, Free Masons and Odd Fellows. Luke Dear is up at Pipestone Springs for a time-that is for...
MAY 9, 1996 Although Whitehall may not be on the center of the map when it comes to cultural affairs, a stop in Whitehall is on the agenda for a nationally recognized string quartet. The National Symphony Orchestra will send a string quartet to Whitehall Sat., May 11, for a noon concert. The chamber concert, part of the American Residences Tour of Montana and Wyoming and one of hundreds of outreach activities the NSO will perform around the state, is free to the public. The NSO presents outreach activities around residency states in an effort t...

Parents should make sure they have arrangements in place for the care of their minor-aged children when planning their estates, according to Montana State University Extension. To make sure parents’ wishes are followed, Marsha Goetting, MSU Extension family and economics specialist, and Kaleena Miller, MSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources agent in Madison-Jefferson County suggest parents create a will that names a guardian and a conservator in case both parents die. A guardianship provides for the care of the children until age 18 a...

The American Red Cross along with actor James Van Der Beek and his wife, Kimberly, have joined together to urge all who are healthy to make this a summer full of life for patients by scheduling an appointment to give blood or platelets. As the nation transitions to a new, hopeful phase of this devastating pandemic and people begin to return to some of their favorite activities, the Red Cross is concerned about the impact this could have on blood donor turnout and the blood supply this summer. The need for lifesaving blood transfusions never...
Health is a lifelong journey. For each of us that journey is unique. Every one of us has our own approach to health and wellness. This week, National Women’s Health Week, serves as a reminder for women and girls to take steps toward caring for themselves and making health a priority. It is not easy to take steps toward better health. Women are often caring for people besides themselves. Life is busy. We are making history as we navigate a pandemic. What steps can we take toward better health? A...
State Leaders applauded the program as “…One of the finest projects I have ever seen undertaken by an Organization. . .” Numerous enough to notice, infrequent enough to startle at seeing, they stimulate reverence, sorrow, sympathy, curiosity, and caution. They affect us all to one degree or another. They are the white crosses which mark the sites of fatal traffic crashes along the highways of Montana. For over 68 years, these white crosses have reminded passing motorists of the dangers of the road, as well as the lives that have been lost...
Following on the heels of a March which yielded well below average mountain and valley precipitation, April delivered the same pattern of dryness with monthly temperatures once again vacillating from well above average to well below average during the month. "April yielded a little bit of everything in the temperature department. The month began with record warmth at mountain locations, which transitioned the low elevation snowpack to melt by the end of the first week," said Lucas Zukiewicz, wat...

Their work accomplished several projects benefiting the park: • 500 feet of boardwalk reconstructed • New steps and str...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reminds landowners, watershed groups and others that this summer’s deadline to apply for Future Fisheries Improvement Program grants is May 31. The goal of FWP’s Future Fisheries Program is to restore rivers, streams and lakes to improve Montana’s wild fish habitat. Each project is assessed by an independent review panel and final funding decisions are made by the Fish and Wildlife Commission. To learn more about the Future...
There's no denying the appeal of dairy in home cooking. Dairy helps make foods silky, creamy and more satisfying. Cheeses in particular can make meals more rich and more flavorful, so much so that they can be truly addictive. Layering cheesy goodness can set any meal apart. That's just what happens with "Cheesy Chicken Tortellini Bake" from The Pampered Chef Stoneware Inspirations (The Pampered Chef Ltd.) by The Pampered Chef Test Kitchens. Freshly cooked chicken and homemade tortellini can be...
