  • COUSIN CLEAVON'S REDNECK COOKING: Skunk Foie Gras

    Cousin Cleavon|Apr 6, 2022

Skunks are a dime a dozen in Montana. No one wanted to catch them or get near them. That is why you will be able to get a lot of skunk livers! The big question is how to catch the skunk without getting sprayed? Well, you will always get sprayed but that means you don't have to be around your wife for a couple of days. The two top methods I use are the live trap and the dog method. With the live trap, I put wet cat food in the trap and wait. Normally I catch a couple of cats before I get a skunk. I let the cats go in Whitehall (no cats were...

  • Free Suicide Prevention Trainings in Bozeman

    Mar 30, 2022

The Overwatch Project is coming at veteran suicide prevention from a new direction, using an approach that was successfully utilized to help solve another complex problem: drunk driving. We're building the equivalent of the "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk" campaign for veterans, only instead of talking about alcohol and vehicles, we're talking about firearms and suicide. The Overwatch Project isn't your usual suicide prevention initiative. It's gritty and blunt and in-your-face, as it...

The report from Generations United, a nonprofit that strengthens practices and policies to benefit all generations, finds that 2.6 million American children are living in “grandfamilies.” While gra...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Kiwi Salsa Chicken Burgers

Grills are firing up all across the country and the savory aroma of smoky foods are wafting through neighborhoods far and wide. Burgers a staple of grilling season, and grillmasters have a lot of leeway when it comes to what goes into their creations. Even though beef is often the meat of choice when making burgers, any ground meat can be used in its place. In fact, leaner meats, such as lamb, pork or chicken, may help people stay the course as they try to eat healthy. This recipe for Chicken...

  • Creating Fiction From History: 3/30/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Mar 30, 2022

The year was 1915. Louisa Jane had just celebrated her eighteenth birthday. Being the only child of Sir Robert and Dalriadan Flockheart, she, of course, had not celebrated in any ordinary way. No, for this daughter of the Lord and Lady, nothing but an all-out ball would do, complete with orchestral music and dancing. The guests included everyone from the lowest denizens of Waukon to the Chinese ambassador (Viceroy, actually), Li Hung Chang, whom they had shared an ocean voyage with almost 19 yea...

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK, Whitehall Ledger|Mar 23, 2022

If you haven't had the privilege to meet Heidi Austin yet, you should make it a point to do so next time you see her around town. Heidi Lynn moved to Whitehall in July of 2021 with her husband, Will, and three of their four daughters. Will's parents, Lionel and Karen Austin are longtime Whitehall residents. Heidi's family has been back and forth across the U.S. several times, from Vermont to Colorado and the southeastern U.S., then back to Montana. "Will would joke about me moving to...

  • Cottage Industries - Montana Style: Carol's Whimzees

    MARTA VARELA, Whitehall Ledger|Mar 23, 2022

It would be very difficult to look at Carol Beiderman's paintings of animals – a grinning cow, a big-eyed squatting frog duo, the female with long eyelashes and lipstick; a Highland cow whose long locks completely cover its eyes, a happy turtle - without smiling. Carol loves animals, which is pretty obvious; you can see the lightness and fun in each one, so it's no surprise she calls them her Whimzees. The Whimzees came along about four years ago, starting as a hobby to enjoy. Carol is s...
