April 1896 & 1922 Part 1 In April 1896, people were eagerly awaiting the actual start of spring weather. Things in national headlines were not too different than now – murder-suicides, kidnapping plots for a prominent person, political bantering. The Battleship Iowa was launched from the Cramps’ shipyard. The following is local news, as written in the April 3rd and 10th editions of the Whitehall Zephyr. Mining: Another small shipment of ore has been made from the Golden Valley; the last came within a few cents of netting $120 per ton; it is...
The sun is shining, the temperature is Montana warm and the aroma of freshly made maple bars is wafting through the conference room. Of course, we follow our noses to the "social hour" table laden with the most scrumptious homemade and thickly on-the-spot-frosted maple bars! Mary Ann Carey and Maureen Dawson were the providers of the sweet fare, but Lori Carey from Boulder was the creator! Not to miss mentioning, there also was a beautiful fresh fruit salad, and a display of living flowers...

Students are using LEGO bricks to create robots with motors and gears that will navigate using a remote control. They are...
April 10, 1997 March snowstorms and temperatures varied across the state adding snow to many already well-above-average snowpack levels, according to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Jefferson River drainage was at 136 percent of average snowpack. The ranks of volunteers assisting with “Spring Clean Whitehall” expanded with civic groups and local businesses donating time, money, and effort to the cleanup project. In support of both the Whitehall cleanup and Arbor Day, Golden Sunlight Mine provided 450 ponderosa pine seed...

Anglers should note that state and tribal fishing licenses are required for fishing in the area. Boaters can rent a slip in the marina, some of which offer electric and water hookups for...
Harold was not sure what to do; he had never been in this position before. He had just been awarded an honorary Ph.D. by Harvard University. Then, over the past weekend, he met the loveliest lady he had ever had the pleasure to lay his eyes on, much less actually meet. As you may notice from his photograph, Harold was not a spring chicken! He was not too old for love, by any means, but neither was he a young man anymore. Past what might be called his prime, whatever that was supposed to mean,...
Warm weather beckons people outdoors. Alfresco dining offers a chance to spend even more time outdoors, and many people will attest that no outdoor gathering is complete without the requisite grilled fare and complimentary sides that are staples of spring and summer dining. Potato salad is one such food that turns up regularly this time of year in many shapes and forms. Traditional potato salad is delicious, but it may not be so great for health-conscious individuals, as it's typically swimming...
Craving the needle – adoration - he’s the mercurial protagonist of rubbish day. He shows up - to dump. It’s downhill from here. The old white rig, gears grinding, rife with putrefaction, picks up speed. Can’t be stopped, he snort-smirks in giddy glee. He’s under no obligation. Half the townsfolk have steeped in anticipation for hours, many overnight. They sniff each other, longing to spin together as one in his vortex of validation. Amused by his churlish capers - placated by porcine promises....

This week is National Public Health Week. This year, the theme for National Public Health Week is “Public Health is Where You Are”, which focuses on the places where we all are physically, mentally, and within our communities that affect our health and our lives. Joe Ryan was elected and Charlotte Trudgeon was re-elected to three-year terms in the Whitehall School Board of Trustees election. New population statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Census, released through the Montana Department of Commerce, shows Jefferson County with...

Over the past few years, I offered health coaching services and health and cooking classes to the Whitehall community on a small scale. Now I am excited to announce that I am teaming up with my dear friends and fellow health warriors, Johanna Paulston and Missy Snitko to expand and create Sage Wellness Center. We are three moms who are passionate about whole-body wellness for ourselves and for our families. Our health journeys led us to realize we weren’t the only ones searching for solutions. As a result, we felt an urgent calling to share o...
This week's featured State Park is Montana's 50th state park, Brush Lake. Located near Dagmar, Montana, the only state park in the northeast corner of Montana. Due to its proximity to Canada, during Prohibition, liquor was easy to come by and kept the Brush Lake Summer Resort in business. There was also a dance hall! After the Prohibition era, church and scout groups used the lake, but in the years before it became a state park, Brush Lake wasn't the popular destination it once had been. Today...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff are seeking public comments on a proposed fee-title acquisition of about 3.5 acres of private land west of Dillon to become a new fishing access site along the Beaverhead River. FWP is undertaking the process of acquiring the parcel as a donation from the Beaverhead Trails Coalition, a nonprofit in Dillon. A neighboring landowner donated the property to the coalition in 2021. The site would be known as Cornell Park Fishing Access Site. Following the acquisition, FWP staff would restore 325 feet of...
