During the month of October, I find myself eating more candy and sugar, and less meat and protein. So, I looked up different ways to get more protein. I looked everywhere on the internet and couldn't find anything that sounded good to me. So, I asked my cousin Jimmy. Just a little back story about Jimmy, he is inbred, er, I mean genetically challenged, and loves to eat insects. Jimmy suggested that I try cockroaches and sugar, he said it's like ice cream with French fries. I tried it, but could never get the right sugar-to-roach ratio right....
Maggie was almost royalty, but she never got the chance. Born Magda Joanna Kowalski, Maggie was the daughter of a distant descendant to the Hapsburgs. Only a lowly lieutenant at the time, her father was unfortunate enough to be stationed aboard a certain mail train traveling between Warsaw and St. Petersburg. It was this train that was the subject of the infamous Bezdany Raid. Even more unfortunate for our little heroine, who was barely ten at the time, she and her mother had accompanied her...

October 15, 1997 The Jefferson County Commissioners took a tentative first step toward creating a local development corporation (LCD) with a vote to “approve, encourage and support” research into creation of an LDC. Jefferson County Economic Development Agent Scott Mendenhall said an LDC would not only enable the county to move more rapidly on potential economic development projects, but would also better sustain efforts on long-range projects. The Whitehall Town Council learned that the leaks in the new water tank slowed considerably, but not...

Please be aware that there will be multiple children crossing Whitehall Street during these days to get to the Library and they do not always look carefully before crossing. The Library will be handing out candy for the Trunk or Treat and on Halloween so stop by and show off your costume! I had a lovely visit with Jennifer Bevill and John Knight from Humanities Montana/DemocracyProject on Monday. They were visiting...
For most people, the end of Daylight Savings Time on Sunday, Nov. 6, means an extra hour of sleep. But for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, it may accelerate the disorientation that comes with “sundowning” that can last through the winter months. For the more than 17,000 Montana family members who serve as unpaid caregivers for 22,000 loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease, the time change and prolonged hours of darkness provide a caution that they may see behavioral changes in their loved ones in the wee...
When beginning your holiday shopping list this year, look no further than Noble Jewelry, located at 14 North Main. Owned and operated by Paul and Georgia Noble, they have been open on and off since late June and have a unique and eclectic collection of fine jewelry right here in Whitehall. Georgia has always had a keen interest in faceting and rockhounding, a love Paul also shares. After moving here four years ago from Bozeman, they decided to turn their love of both hobbies, as well as a talent for jewelry making, into a business. “We’re curre...
It’s a common story: Candace McNatt of Durango, in southern Colorado, kept losing bidding wars to buy a house. She finally settled on a tiny home of just 350 square feet. McNatt works as an operating room nurse and is a single mother of two teenagers, one about to go to college. Though she landed on the home ownership ladder at one of its lower rungs, she’s relieved. “But this is not how I saw myself approaching the age of 40,” she muses. The rent on her home lot is $650; her mortgage just $604. Combined, that’s about half of what she had b...

RonLynn Peltzer was born in 1789 to James and EvaLynn Peltzer of Leitch's Station in the Territory soon to become the State of Kentucky. RonLynn's father had served as a Corporal under Captain David Leitch during the Revolutionary War. In fact, the Peltzers and the Leitchs had become close friends, as both had immigrated from Europe at about th...

24 was winding down but not without turmoil in October of that year. A miners' strike was continuing in Colorado, a child is killed by rats in a Baltimore home, the upcoming presidential election was causing a division in the democratic party, and troops were sent to Tuskahoma in the Choctawcountry to guard against possible trouble from the selection of a new tribal chief. People of Montana were insulted by John Sherman, Senator from Ohio, when he called us an "undesirable state" and we were...
October 8, 1997 Borden’s Hotel, a Whitehall landmark on the corner of Legion Avenue and Main Street since 1913, was sold. The property - an unused hotel upstairs, restaurant, and bar downstairs - had been on the market for three years. On Monday, October 6th, Vickie and Linda Dyar, two sisters who owned a gift shop in West Yellowstone, signed the papers and purchased Borden’s from Butch and Mary Jones. The Joneses had owned Borden’s for five years. They bought the property in partnership with two other couples, but through a series of event...
I love watching big machines building things. As a child, I would go to huge construction jobs with my dad and ride around with him on his motorcycle as he checked out all the different areas of new shopping centers, schools, automobile plants, and more. There is a new ambulance barn going up by my house and I must confess I spent too much time watching the digging up of all that dirt! It seems that all over Whitehall there are new businesses going in, construction going on and new people coming to join the community. It is great to see our tow...
