The funds generated will benefit Weeds in his rehabilitation and recovery aft...
In a Volunteer Hall decked out in spider webs and skeletons for “Fright Night” festivities, candidates for County Commissioner and Sheriff faced off Monday evening at a Boulder Monitor Forum – most often revealing how much they agreed on key issues facing Jefferson County. The forum brought together four native Montanans, all of them longtime residents of Jefferson County with extensive careers as public servants. Chad Cross and Tom Grimsrud, who are vying for the Sheriff’s job, both have worked in Jefferson County law enforcement for about t...

As millions of children attend school this year, more than one in five of them will experience bullying, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. And in a national study by the Cyberbullying Research Center, nearly 21% of tweens said they had been a target, aggressor or witness to bullying online or by other electronic means. As parents search for ways to protect their children, a growing group of families are turning to an unlikely source for practical guidance: the Bible. Anaconda residents Jason and Tressa talk with their...
Whitehall's Screams Come True Haunted House, Hay Maze, and Escape Rooms is celebrating the completion of its fourth year and its biggest year to date, with nearly 4,000 people going through the haunt over the course of six days. "I'm really hoping the community and the local businesses see the value of this event and the revenue that it brings into the town, not only to Gold Junction Presents, but to bars, gas stations, restaurants, and more," said Pullman. The event donates a portion of its...
Few cuisine styles are as diverse and beloved as those that have been exported from the Mediterranean nation of Italy. From pasta to pizza and everything in between, the rich and savory flavors of Italian cuisine are enjoyed across the globe. Italian restaurants can be found in many cities and towns throughout the world. However, it's just as easy to create traditional, mouthwatering dishes at home with simple ingredients. Manicotti is a popular pasta dish that can be filled with cheese or...
"Mo-ommmmmmmmmmmmmm; do we hafta?!" Mary Anna and Elizabeth Margaret Donner asked in pure harmony. Neither poor girl, now 14 and 15, respectively, had ever liked getting their picture taken. Of course, this was back in the day, before parents could just readily go around snapping photographs aplenty of their prides and joys. Even as young children, as far back as their parents John and Clara could remember, Mary and Lizzie had never begged for attention either: they were usually more than happy...

In late October 1896, the focus was on the upcoming November election. But there was plenty of other news on the front page. A hurricane caused severe damage to resorts at Coney Island, a Brit beat American Johnny Murphy for the bantamweight boxing world title, and notorious highwayman Albert Hence Downen is arrested in Denver and confesses to at least 50 hold-ups around Denver. The focus in Whitehall was also leaning toward the election but regular life continued on as well. The following are...
October 22, 1997 The Supreme Court oral argument briefings on the Whitehall water improvement project were delayed due to the Montana Attorney General’s request for a 10-day delay. The delay was apparently not caused by other - or higher priority - workloads. Rather, the delay was from the relative importance of the case. Neither Bullock nor Baker would say the Whitehall water project case had more importance than other cases they worked on, but both understood the case did not contain itself to the limits of Whitehall. The Whitehall water impr...
Ellen Baumler will be at the Jefferson County Museum ( 5 North Main Street, Clancy) on Saturday, October 29 at 3 PM for ghost stories she has researched. If the crowd is too large for the museum, we will move to Clancy Methodist Church. The Book Seller will be open 1-3 PM before the start of the lecture in the Community Room of the ORSH. History and the supernatural are the canvas for this program that intertwines the past with the present. Historian, storyteller, and award-winning author Ellen Baumler weaves a ghostly web in a...
