Jim-Bob's parents, James II and Elisha Bennet were among about 50 other inhabitants of the small farming area. James the Second was a pensioner from the Mine, drawing a decent $16 a month. Because of the...

  • Liberty Place Lights On V: On Air May 19th

DAVID PARKER, Liberty Place Project and Program Director|May 11, 2022

We are very excited about this year’s performance, for a couple of reasons. First, though it was a fun experience playing outside on the green last year, we are looking forward to the energy and atmosphere of the theater again. Secondly, we are trying something completely different this year. Our shows are typically a music performance with a mix of original songs and some covers. But this year we are producing a live radio drama - somewhere between an old-time radio show and Garrison Keillor’s “Prairie Home Companion.” Everyone was a little...

A prominent feature that draws visitors to this Jefferson Valley community are the twelve Lewis and Clark murals depicting the Corps of Discovery's passage thru the landscape. In 1999, residents created the base for each mural, while Kit Mather and Michelle Tebay, who both live in the area, painted the details. Spread around Whitehall, these paintings link the town today to Montana's important place in the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase and beyond. Memories can be easily lost through the...

    COUSIN CLEAVON|May 4, 2022

Here in Montana, you hear a lot about the mythical creature called the Man-Bear-Pig. I was sitting around the fire last weekend with my family and Uncle Jim-Bob told a hero story of how he saved Mary-Loo from the beast. Interesting story about her name, she was born in a rest-room in London. Jim-Bob also made the best pork rinds I have ever had, from the creature. Jim-Bob and Mary-Loo were going out in the wood last fall to hunt for deer. Mary shot a Nice 4-point buck when it started to become dark out. Mary was yelling for Bob, but Bob was...

  • A Do-It-Yourself, Homegrown National Park

ASTA BOWEN, Writers on the Range|Apr 27, 2022

National parks have been getting a lot of love since the pandemic, so much that this summer you need reservations at many. For example, you must make a reservation just to drive Montana's legendary Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, and passes can sell out within hours of release. That's better than stalking parking lots before sunrise and finding trails turning into conga lines, but it makes me all the more interested in a new national park that's in the works. It's even closer to...

    DANNY MERGENTHALER, Jehovahs Witness USA|Apr 27, 2022

After a year of pandemic isolation, Tampa, Florida, resident Gary Bagwell emerged to finally enjoy a “luxury” he longed for — a haircut. Sitting in the chair for the first time in 18 months, he relaxed and settled in for a little pampering. When his barber asked a fellow stylist to make change for a $20 bill Bagwell was paying with, the burly co-worker reacted with a barrage of stinging expletives and repeatedly punched the barber, once in the face then ten blows to his head. In an instant, the peace that Bagwell hoped for turned to panic...

  • Scams Everywhere: How Not To Be a Victim in an Age of Fraud

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Apr 27, 2022

Thirty years ago no one thought we would run our lives from our cell phones; for many at that time, a cell phone was a frivolous piece of technology only the wealthy could afford. Now kindergarteners sport their own I-Phones and we are lost without our tablets, smartwatches, and the like. Unfortunately, with technology come those who know how to use information to their benefit. Scammers are everywhere. In Whitehall, High Peaks Federal Credit Union manager LaDonna Knox has seen firsthand the scams that come across her desk. Most recently...

  • A Brief History of Whitehall, Montana: Part I

MARK SPERO and RICK GRAETZ, University of Montana|Apr 27, 2022

Like many southwest Montana valleys, the Jefferson River served as a passage for native American tribes "going to buffalo" on the Montana prairie. Where the town of Whitehall now stands, was a crossroads for trails that would then follow the Jefferson to the Three Forks where many of the native peoples joined forces and traveled together. And over time no one tribe controlled the area, rather it was used for hunting and rest by the Bannock, Shoshone, Crow, Nez Perce, and Blackfeet amongst...
