You've come a long way, Baby! At the tender age of 13, not only was Carolina Duggard the first from her family to attend an institute of higher learning, she also might have been one of the youngest female graduates of St. Paul College, a public and community college in St. Paul, Minnesota. How did this little girl, whom we last saw at the tender age of 4, end up in St. Paul, Minnesota? Well, that's rather a long story; growing up as she did in little Whitehall, Montana, in the 20s and 30s,...

JANUARY 21, 1998 Tom Rice and Rice Ford, started by Tom’s father Ed in 1938, celebrates its 50th anniversary as an “informal, virtually no pressure approach to car sales.” A mini crime wave swept over Whitehall with Jefferson River Auto (now Whitehall Auto Sales) reporting a break-in, a car parked at Patacini Tire (now Full Circle Tire) vandalized, and theft from cars parked at Ropers Lanes & Lounge and Town Pump announced over the weekend. In addition to these crimes, an attempted break-in was reported at Mountain West Automotive earlier in th...

Some people have become so alarmed by what children might read in school or in libraries that they want books they don't like removed - immediately. The targeted books include scenes of sexual awakening, gender identity, racism, or violence. But why aren't these alarmists focusing on a book that's chock-full of incest, rape, and gore? I'm talking, of course, about the Bible. In Genesis 19:30-36, Lot's daughters get him drunk in a cave and his eldest daughter has incestuous sex with him. Judges...

Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) officials are reporting substantial influenza (flu) activity during the first three months of this current flu season, from September through December 2022, that has far exceeded the prior five-year averages. Since the week of September 25 through December 31, 2022, there have been 408 influenza-associated hospitalizations reported to DPHHS, well above the five-year seasonal average of 88 hospitalizations for that same time frame. The five-year seasonal average for hospitalizations for an...
I just had an eight-minute call with my good friend Tina, whom I've known for over three decades. I could never seem to connect with her (she has a very demanding job) until I sent her a text last week proposing an eight-minute phone call. That seems weird, she wrote back. Come on, I wheedled. You can do it. The president of the United States could probably do eight minutes! I promise not to go long. Name a time. At the appointed hour, I gave her a ring. In short order, we talked about our...

Back in 2015, our sleepy town of Whitehall was plagued by a Chupacabra. Not all of Whitehall was affected, but the goat farmers were scared. A little back story, Chupacabras are like wolves. They are hairless beasts with long tongues. They are faster than a wolf and smaller than a pit bulldog, and only eat goats. They normally live in hot places like Mexico. We still don't know how it made its way all the way to Montana. The theory is that one of the new people in town brought it with them when they moved here or one of the local farmers...
As babies go, she certainly wasn't remarkable. Of course, every baby, no matter how ugly they are, is cute. Barley certainly wasn't an ugly baby, although one might have noted that they'd seen cuter (not to the mother, of course.) Barbara Leigh Jones, Barley to those who knew and loved her, was born on the 19th of April, in the year of our Lord, 1899, to John and Margaret Jones of Isabella, a small town in Polk County, Tennessee. At the time of her introduction to this world, though the economy...

In today’s world, being stressed out is almost worn as a badge of honor. People are overbooked, overwhelmed, stressed out, and just plain exhausted! Stress is bombarding us from every imaginable angle, affecting us physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and energetically. All of that stress is taking its toll on our health. In fact, estimates show that stress is at the root of 80-90% of all diseases! This fact should be a strong motivator for us to be intentional about reducing and releasing our stressors. Think of stress like the l...
The Jefferson Valley Museum will be hosting its second oral history program at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, January 18th at the museum barn. It will feature an interview recorded in 1989 by Roy Millegan with Lena Brown Slausen along with photos from the area. She and her siblings lived most of their childhood at Homestake. Three of her brothers attended school in Whitehall in 1929 and 1930 where all were outstanding athletes. Lena's grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth Flagg were among the first...
JANUARY, Part I, 125 YEARS AGO: As 1897 dawned, it was a new year with new tragedies and many of the same old problems. Sabotage to a railroad bridge in Tennessee caused the deaths of dozens of people. Aqueduct, New York experienced a serious riot over low wages and high food prices for those working on the Erie canal. Minnesota, South Dakota, and Nebraska were stalled under heavy snow and blizzard conditions while flooding was rampant in Illinois, Arkansas, and northern Michigan. The Spanish...
JANUARY 14, 1998 The Whitehall water project court case was center stage at the Montana Supreme Court at a hearing on January 13, 1998. What was supposed to be an 80-minute hearing stretched over two hours as the Supreme Court justices and attorneys discussed and debated the multiple facets of the case. Whitehall attorney Patricia Day-Moore, representing a group of Whitehall residents who oppose the water project, began the hearing by arguing the MT Constitution gives its citizens broad rights and powers, and state laws should not be allowed...

A late October winter storm brought widespread precipitation to many SNOTEL stations in Montana. That snow was within one to two weeks of the typical snowpack onset and earlier than the fall of 2021, which was nearly a month late in some locations due to an unseasonably warm and dry fall. “Other good news is that November and December brought cool and wet weather, above-normal precipitation, and snowfall across most of Montana. The result was a good start to the snowpack accumulation season and currently, all major rivers basins have an a...
