  • Old Bones Can Be a Small Town's Movie Stars

ADAM LARSON, Writers on the Range|May 10, 2023

The prehistoric past can perk up the present. When woolly mammoth bones were found in my hometown in Wisconsin years ago, they became the centerpiece of one of our local museums. Today, they continue to attract visitors and serve as one of the city's informal symbols. Unfortunately, the story across much of the fossil-rich West is more abandonment than local fame. During the late 19th century, paleontologists made huge finds in the region, excavating specimens of famed dinosaurs like...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: 10 Unique Ways to Use Rotisserie Chicken

    May 10, 2023

Hot and ready to serve, rotisserie chicken makes for a quick and easy meal when time is of the essence and people don't want to spend on dining out at a nearby restaurant. Rotisserie chicken can be served right out of the container just like a traditional roasted chicken. It also can be a component in many different meals...

  • Reducing the Risk of Rabies in Jefferson County

JIM MURPHY, Jefferson County Health Officer|May 3, 2023

The arrival of warmer weather in Jefferson County increases our chances of risky encounters with wildlife. One such risk, to both humans and domestic animals, is rabies. Animals commonly associated with rabies in Montana, such as skunks and bats, emerge during early and mid-spring - the same time most of us want to enjoy the warmer weather. Fortunately, reducing the risk of rabies for humans, pets and livestock is possible by taking simple precautions. Rabies is a preventable viral disease most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid...

  • Talley Touches Trojan Hearts

    CEANNA BERKRAM, Whitehall High School|May 3, 2023

Last Monday afternoon (4/24), Whitehall and Harrison students and staff filed into the gym for what was thought to be another typical school assembly. National speaker Terrence Talley, however, provided an experience that was far from ordinary. With a mixture of hysterical laughter and heavy, albeit meaningful, sentiment for the entire staff and student body, everyone felt the impact of his message "don't give up." While this is a message that is often heard, it is not something that is...

  • Watercraft Inspection Stations Open Across Montana

MORGAN E. JACOBSEN, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks|May 3, 2023

With the exception of Eureka, watercraft inspection stations are open. All vehicles transporting any type of boat, including canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and rafts are required to stop at all inspection stations they encounter. Watercraft inspection stations are Montana’s first line of defense to prevent the movement of AIS, which can have devastating impacts on Montana waterways. More than 2,400 watercraft have been inspected so far this year. Of those, 13 boats were found to be transporting invasive mussels. Recently, a pontoon boat was i...

  • COUSIN CLEAVON'S REDNECK COOKING: Rack of Wombat

    COUSIN CLEAVON|May 3, 2023

It is that time of year where you start to uncover the BBQ and clean off your deck. Everyone is looking for a new and exciting BBQ recipe. We had a reader, Alice, from New Jersey send in a recipe for rack of wombat. I had to Google what a wombat was, and they don't live in New Jersey. She wrote to me explaining that in 2000 to 2002 near Jackson there was a zoo. Every now and then an animal would escape. One year a wombat got out and Alice shot it thinking it was a big rat. New Jersey is known for their big rats. There are a lot of people that g...

April 12th 1864, 159 years ago: The American Civil War begins. Montana would not become a territory until three years later and played little role in the Civil War itself. Despite this, several Montanans enlisted in Union regiments during this time, and a company of "Galvanized Yankees," primarily made up of former prisoners of war, were stationed at Fort Benton. April 1st 1873, 150 years ago: The Coinage Act is enacted, ending silver standard dollars and causing a crash in the silver industry....

  • Tech Questions? Get the Answers: 4/26/2023

TOM SCHOBER, White Hat Tech Solutions|Apr 26, 2023

Q: What is a subwoofer and why do I want one? The short answer is that a subwoofer generates low-frequency sound in music or movies. But what does that mean? All sounds can be measured by their frequency. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. Sounds like high hats, cymbals, and the spoken letters T or S are high frequency. Because the sound waves happen so fast they are close together. This means that the speaker that makes those sounds is usually small. These small speakers are...
