Many in Whitehall were aware of police activity several weeks ago at the Whitehall Post Office. However, until now, details of the event could not be released. At a press confference on Thursday, December 15, agents of the Montana High Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and several other government entities held a press conference at the Montana Department of Justice in Butte. A multi-agency undercover investigation into a large-scale drug trafficking organization that had ties to the Sinaloa...
After nearly four decades at 15 West Legion, the Whitehall Ledger vacated the space on December 20, 2022, for its new home at 405 West Legion. Where is that? many have already asked. Some know it as the Headstart building, others as the wrestling building; I myself will always know it as where Jane’s Hair once was. But yes, it is the dark grey building located across the way from Liberty Place’s corporate offices. Please use the west side entrance, in the alley. Signage is on its way and the office is coming together nicely. Please have pat...
Mrs. Clause never spends Christmas with her husband. Technically, fries w/ ketchup is eating fruits and vegetables. As kids, we wish for fake things to be real, but when we grow up we wish real things were fake. Batman has a vitamin D deficiency since he barely gets any sunlight and is always in a body suit. No wonder Bane managed to break his back. According to the human brain, the human brain is the most complex thing known to the human brain. The most groundbreaking invention was the shovel. Christmas just ain’t Christmas until you watch H...
Dear Editor, In the early 1970s, frustrated with the corporate boot that dominated and bullied Montanans, the state’s people rose up. Led by ordinary citizens like Pastor George Harper of Helena, local historian and mother of six Louise Cross of Glendive, and League of Women Voters leader Dorothy Eck of Bozeman, they crafted what is now recognized as a world-renowned Constitution. Among many important motivations was their conviction that in order to free Montanans from corporate dominance at the expense of workers, farmers and ordinary c...

December, Part 2 Those living in December 1896 would be amazed at how things seem to be repeating in 2022. Wheat crops were failing in the "old world" causing famine; four banks in the eastern U. S. failed; there is public unrest in China against the ruling class, and crimes in other parts of the country make the front page of the Zephyr. The following news items are taken as written from the December 18 and 25, 1896 editions of the Jefferson Valley Zephyr. Mining News: Messrs. Cutler and...
She is a quiet, unassuming little elf who spends the year doing amazing things for others. She needs no fancy titles, public recognition, or payment for her quiet service. It all started out when she was caring for a loved one who would not recover. Needing something to pass the time, she began crocheting hats for children. Under her tender care, the yarn became transformed into foxes, giraffes, bears, lions, frogs, and more. Each hat became a mini work of art as the love she shared for others became gifts for those who did not have as much....
Christmas is in the air with school plays, business parties, and church, and community events. Last-minute decisions are being made about travel, or what will be served during the day’s celebration. Here in the Whitehall valley, there is no question about having a “white Christmas” this year, and honestly, I prefer the typical warmer weather we are accustomed to. Most importantly, I am grateful because the message of Christmas is for every day of the year—Jesus came to save us from our sins. Confusing messages have abounded regarding Christm...
On Thursday, December 15 Jefferson beat Whitehall 47-41. The defense played well while the offense struggled to put the ball in the hole. Whitehall had only 13 points after 3 quarters. The Trojans exploded for 28 pints in the 4th to make the game interesting late. Gavin French lead the team with 10 points and 10 rebounds. On Friday, December 16 Three Forks beat Whitehall 50-39. Whitehall fought hard from start to finish. The Trojans lead 34-33 going into the final quarter. Three Forks made a...

Varsity wrestlers competed throughout the day with senior Miles Hourauf (182), senior Leo Scafani (HWT), and senior Kyle Denny (170) qualifying to continue Saturday. The final results had Hoerauf placing second and Scafani placing...

Governor Greg Gianforte prohibited the use of TikTok on state equipment and for state business in Montana on Friday, December 16. In a memo to Chief Information Officer Kevin Gilbertson and executive agency directors, the governor cited TikTok’s practice of harvesting expansive amounts of data from its users’ devices and offering this information to the Chinese Communist Party. “Government’s chief responsibility is keeping its citizens safe and secure,” Governor Gianforte wrote. “Use of TikTok on state devices poses a significant risk to the...
With help from several partners, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks this month completed the purchase of an 829-acre addition to Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area. The new parcel, known as the Willow Creek addition, is about 4 miles south of Anaconda and shares 2.5 miles of boundary with the WMA. It contains winter range that mule deer and elk use heavily, as well as high-quality pronghorn fawning and summer range. “We’re thrilled to see the Willow Creek addition be conserved with the rest of Mount Haggin WMA for the perpetual benefit of Mon...
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is extending the public comment deadline on the draft grizzly bear management plan and associated draft environmental impact statement (EIS) to Feb. 4. The purpose of the draft plan and draft EIS is to guide the long-term management and conservation of grizzly bears across the state. “We know the holidays are a busy time for people and their families,” FWP Director Hank Worsech said. “We want to make sure people have a chance to share their best ideas with us and so extending the comment period by 30 days will...
Effective immediately, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is opening wolf trapping season in all areas of occupied grizzly bear habitat across the state, with the exception of deer and elk hunting district (HD) 130 in northwest Montana (See map). In August, the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission approved wolf hunting and trapping regulations for the 2022 season, which ends March 15, 2023. The regulations include a floating start date for wolf trapping in occupied grizzly bear habitat. The intent of the floating start date is to avoid conflict...
Yetis are close cousins of sasquatch. Yetis live in the Himalayas and other cold places, including Alaska, but just like humans, they like to visit their families at Christmas. So, when winter hits in Montana, Alaska yetis walk down to see their cousins. You are wondering, if they walk down from Alaska, why do we never see them? Yetis have the ability to make snowstorms so that no one can see them or trace them. They also have thick fur, with the chameleon-like ability to blend into the background, wherever they are. The heavy coat, plus...
Mary Ann McGee was born to William and Margaret McGee on November the 8th, 1889, which, incidentally, was the day when Montana gained statehood. Where Mary started her life on this Earth is not so important to our story as where she ended up and might have become. Both second-generation Irish immigrants, Mary's parents were used to hard work, which was a good thing, for there was plenty to be done as our fledgling nation rounded the curve coming into the 20th century. William had caught the...
