The dawn of a new year presents plenty of opportunities to look to the future. Resolutions are made each January, with most centering on ways to get healthy. Not all resolutions need to be of the healthy, however. Once in a while it is fine to indulge, so a resolution to entertain more or to explore new baking opportunities can spice things up in the year ahead. People aspiring to spend more time in the kitchen can celebrate winter baking and National Chocolate Cake Day (January 27)...

  • Guest Opinion: Vaccine Mandates: A Partisan Divide

    BRAD MOLNAR, Montana State Senator|Dec 15, 2021

People recruited to run for the legislature are told it is for three months, every other year. Truth is that it is for 90 days spread over four months; and constituent interaction never stops. Lately vaccine mandates/exceptions, real and imagined, fill my inbox. Here is where we are with state law. HB 702, sponsored by Rep. Jeniffer Carlson (R) Manhattan Mt. passed the House 63-33 with one Republican, Geraldine Custer, voting “no”; no democrats voted yes. HB 702 clarifies that persons providing employment or services may not discriminate bas...

  • Guest Opinion: Responsible Gun Owners Need to Be Heard

BEN LONG, Writers on the Range|Dec 15, 2021

I own a closet full of guns. But nowhere in that closet is ammunition. That is locked up elsewhere, reflecting a rule I was taught in childhood. Guns are powerful, even deadly, tools. If you own one, it’s on you to keep it safe. That is what the parents of a Michigan teenager failed to do, and their son murdered four of his fellow high school students. Not long ago, safety seemed gospel for gun owners and the gun industry alike. But something has changed. Responsibility has been discarded in a twisted form of gun idolatry. That change is d...

  • Whitehall Woman Arrested For North Dakota Felony Theft

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Dec 15, 2021

Whitehall resident Carol Feist, 56, is currently in custody at the Jefferson County jail in Boulder, accused of committing wire fraud against her in-laws. Police say in October of 2021, Carol Feist claimed to be her Bismarck-based in-laws to transfer $134,000 to a Montana title company. She financed the remainder of the $474,000 purchase price and produced notarized documents stating her father-in-law was the co-borrower. Law enforcement said she forged her father-in-law's signature as a co-sign...

  • Montanans Launch Elk Management Coalition

    Dec 15, 2021

Montanans have traditionally worked together to solve thorny issues related to wildlife conservation and public lands. That’s the Montana way. But, unfortunately, conflict has replaced collaboration as the status quo. In recent years, elk management has become one of the most divisive issues in the state, dividing groups who once worked together towards shared goals and harming our hunting traditions. Elk, in particular, have become politically charged. It’s time that the citizens of Montana take back elk management from the politicians and...

MORGAN E. JACOBSEN, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks|Dec 15, 2021

Every year, a new generation of trappers takes to the mountains and plains of Montana. Those new trappers need training and instruction, not only for safety and ethics, but also on how to truly enjoy the outdoor experience.
