  • CONNECTING POINT: Repeat After Me

    BILL LANES|Dec 11, 2024

When was the last time you heard the phrase, “Repeat after me,” or spoken it? Somehow, we all find ourselves on one side of this scenario: repeating some direction or question with the phrase. Other times, we’re on the receiving end of the phrase, either catching or missing the point. Frustration can surely add to the dilemma when communication breaks down. Jesus often found Himself communicating some direction or teaching with His disciples only to be frustrated with their lack of clarity or even disobedience. It’s important to note that Jesus...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Tender Gingerbread Cake

    Dec 11, 2024

Many foods are associated with Christmastime, but none are perhaps as familiar as gingerbread. Although gingerbread's slightly spicy and warming tang is often enjoyed in cookie form or baked into panels used to create gingerbread houses, the spice combination of ginger, cloves, and cinnamon can impart a delicious flavor to cakes as well. INGREDIENTS 1 cup packed muscovado sugar (dark brown works great) 1/2 cup plus 2 Tablespoons butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs, room...

  • Old Fire Lookout Towers Find Renewed Purpose

ZEKE LLOYD, Writers on the Range|Dec 11, 2024

There's a small wooden cabin at the top of Northwest Peak, a few miles from Montana's borders with Idaho and Canada, and Chuck Manning, 79, believes lookouts like this one deserve a second chance at being useful. The fire lookout sits about 7,700 feet above sea level and seems in good condition despite being abandoned since 1955, when the Forest Service last staffed the outpost. Manning leads the Northwest Montana Lookout Association, a nonprofit group that supports government agencies in...

  • Why Montana Data is Missing From National Childhood Immunization Reports

    ALEX SAKARIASSEN, Montana Free Press|Dec 11, 2024

This story is adapted from the MT Lowdown, a weekly newsletter digest containing original reporting and analysis published every Friday. A reader pointed out earlier this week that national reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on kindergarten vaccination rates have shown what they considered a conspicuous omission over the past three years — a complete absence of data for the state of Montana. Finding their curiosity infectious, we dug in. We confirmed that, shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, M...

  • Legislature Proposes 2025 Session Rules

    TOM LUTEY, Montana Free Press|Dec 11, 2024

Montana lawmakers avoided another fight over transgender politics while crafting rules for the upcoming 2025 Legislature, saying they didn’t want the distraction. Members of the Joint Rules Committee narrowly rejected a proposal to limit bathroom access for transgender lawmakers. Several said banning transgender women lawmakers from women’s restrooms in the Capitol would only distract from the Legislature’s business. Rep. Jerry Schillinger, of Circle, proposed the ban. “It says what probably shouldn’t need to be said and puts in rules whe...

  • Dear Editor: A Thank You to the Land That Now Surrounds Me

    RUTH LOTT|Dec 11, 2024

Dear Editor, Despite the fact the headline should have read "River Ranch Gets Green Light as Proposed New Conservation Easement," I am so grateful to the Whitehall Ledger for re-printing the article the Monitor ran two weeks ago. Chad Klinkenborg was my contact at Montana Land Reliance (MLR), and he can be reached at chad@mtlandreliance@gmail.com or 406-570-4271. He explained...

  • Thought Provokers: 12/11/2024

    Dec 11, 2024

There are ten steps to cleaning a slow cooker: Soak, followed by saying nine times, “I thought I got everything.” Humans transformed their apex predators into their best friends. If two motorcyclists driving side by side held hands, they could be considered a car. Someone is living the perfect day right now, but you’ll never know about it because they’re too busy enjoying it to post about it. Morality is often ignored not because it lacks importance but because humanity has yet to find a way to measure it. It’s interesting how singers/p...

  • Just Ask Georgia: 12/11/2024

    GEORGIA|Dec 11, 2024

Georgia, I have a question, My annual Christmas party is coming up, and I want to uninvite my sister and her fiance. Let me explain. Last year, when asked if she was going, she said with disgust, “I’m not going to that,” but then showed up late, announced her engagement, and left. I would’ve been happy for her, but she didn’t say hello to me, didn’t say goodbye, didn’t even show me the ring. I just heard cheering from the other room, and then, after they left, it was all anyone could talk about. This year, I invited all my siblings again, and i...
