  • Collision with Whitehall School Bus Leaves One Dead

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Dec 1, 2021

On Monday, November 29, just before 7 AM, a Whitehall school bus collided head-on with a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country minivan after the van negotiated a sharp right-hand corner while traveling West and crossed the center line. The accident occurred at mile marker 3 on Hwy 2, just outside Whitehall. The bus was traveling East and headed to the start of the bus route. Following impact, the minivan and bus came to rest in the roadway. The 52-year-old male driver was declared dead at the scene. His 35-year-old female passenger of Belgrade went to...

  • Influenza Season Is Here: Stay Informed & Healthy

PAM HANNA RN, Jefferson County Public Health Supervisor|Dec 1, 2021

The 2021-22 flu season is here. Last year, Montana had no diagnosed flu. Those who follow flu trends are concerned we will see increased flu activity this year. Experts suspect the low number of flu cases last year may mean fewer people with immunity to the strains circulating this year. This, combined with relaxed prevention measures for COVID-19, could result in a challenging 2021-22 flu season. Currently, there have been eleven confirmed influenza cases in Montana. One of the eleven...

  • Thought Provokers: 12/1/2021

    Dec 1, 2021

Cookbooks are still not obsolete because recipe websites are terrible. The grinch gets a bad rap. He never hated Christmas, he just hated people. The social acceptability of farting versus peeing yourself swaps when you’re in a body of water. Some people believe that secret societies of wealthy people run everything and use us all as pawns, but that’s really just society. They aren’t even secret about it. If you sleep 7 instead of 8 hours a day you’ll technically live 3 years longer. Deer don’t connect headlights with danger because the sun h...

  • Dear Editor: Freedom House

    DON LEPINSKY|Dec 1, 2021

Dear Editor, Freedom House, a non-profit NGO conducting research and advocacy on democracy, political freedom, and human rights, recently reported that US democracy is in decline and has been for the last decade. They urgently recommend reforms to reverse this nefarious trend toward authoritarian rule. They listed several reasons for our decline, which, in my opinion, can be summed up to the extreme forces in play on both ends of the political spectrum. The far-left liberals and the ultra-right-wing conservatives, neither of whom understand...

  • Dear Editor: Corn!

    Charles Haddon Shank|Dec 1, 2021

Dear Editor, Let me start by saying that corn used to be my most favored vegetable when it came to canned veggies, anyway. When I had good teeth, I would devour corn-on-the-cob like it was going out of style back in the day. Even to this day, I like my cornbread made with...you guessed it...creamed corn. But here’s where we come to the crux of the matter. It’s no big secret that corn, the delicious vegetable that saved our Pilgrim forefathers from starvation, has little to no nutritional value! Furthermore, studies have shown that the ind...

  • Gov. Gianforte Seeks Nominations for Montana Governor's Veteran Commendation

    Dec 1, 2021

Governor Greg Gianforte launched the 2021 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation and is seeking nominations for the award. “Our veterans and their families have sacrificed so much in defense of our freedoms and our way of life. Even after their time in military service, many Montana veterans have kept the flame of service burning by helping others in their community,” Gov. Gianforte said. “I’m asking Montanans to help me identify and recognize these outstanding Montana veterans, and I look forward to honoring these heroes for their service t...

  • Editorial: What You Will, and Will Not, See in the Ledger

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Dec 1, 2021
    1

I had an experience on Monday while covering the horrific bus vs van accident. The incident is something I cannot ignore and is what spurred this editorial. In February 2009, Dallice Smith was killed in a car accident on Highway 69. She was a friend, a former teammate on softball leagues, and someone the majority of our community knew by sight. At the time of her death, I worked at the Ledger. When news of her accident broke, the former owner and Editor of the Ledger chose to run photos of the scene. I disagreed with his decision, but I was...

  • MTDOT Finishes Construction on I-15/I-90 Interchange Ramps

    ALY RUSSELL, Strategies 360|Dec 1, 2021

Just in time for holiday travel, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Jim Gilman Excavating are excited to announce the formal completion of construction on the I-15/I-90 Interchange Project outside Butte. The roadway is open with fresh pavement, LED lighting, and guardrail improvements. Work on I-15 and I-90 in Butte was part of MDT’s efforts for Pavement Preservation, which ensures good roads remain good, as roads in bad shape require a lot more money, time, and resources to fix. “With harsh winters and heavy traffic in the summ...

  • Connecting Point: The Gift That Keeps Giving

    BILL LANES|Dec 1, 2021

The holiday season is in full swing, and retailers are tempting consumers with Christmas specials. I swear, the more I’ve aged, the margin for advertising has broadened wider and wider. Will we see Christmas in July at some point? Now I’m not opposed to celebrating holidays all year round; in fact, I suggest that celebrating Christ-like virtues personally in our lives is for all 365 days in the year. A little less consumerism might be nice. So in the spirit of Christmas, another virtue worth discussing, is being gift-full, and yes, it’s a wor...

  • Creating Fiction from History: December 1, 2021

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK, Whitehall Ledger|Dec 1, 2021

Understandably, Charlotte was proud to wear her new dress for the nice man holding the camera. It was her birthday trip after all! She and her parents, Russian immigrants Andrei and Alina Semenov, moved to Chicago from Kazan, Russia. They had begun homesteading a small parcel of land just west of the big city about three years previous. Charlotte was used to hardship, so when she stepped onto the boat headed east, down the Volga to the North Sea, she was prepared for the long, arduous journey,...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Golden Harvest Pork Stew

    Dec 1, 2021

Slow cookers can be unsung kitchen heroes any time of the year, but particularly during the colder seasons. That's because slow cookers take on one-pot meals with ease. A person simply places all the ingredients inside the crock, then returns in 8 hours or so to a completely cooked meal. Certain recipes, including stews, lend themselves well to the slow-cooking method. While beef is often associated with stew, plenty of proteins can take the place of beef, including pork. This recipe for Golden...
