Sayings like “the understatement of the year” are often overstatements. Biologically, evolution automatically creates the illusion of intelligent design. Maturity is knowing when to be immature. Most dogs understand more human words than humans understand dog words. Coming up with a new, unique, random idea is impossible because you can only combine preexisting ideas with observations/memories of the things that happen around you. Anything you think of out of “thin air” can be linked to these things. For some premodern folk, public executi...
1+ YEARS AGO - November, Part I: Even 126 Years ago, people grew tired of constant political messages before election day and the social unrest on the East Coast. U.S. Government handouts in Cuba were making it difficult to get people back to work. A mine that employed 500 people before the war struggled to keep 150 people on the payroll because miners did not need to earn money for food. U.S. soldiers who returned from the fighting in Cuba were dying by the dozens of typhoid fever. The...

There will be children’s programming, gifts for all of our stressed-out patrons, and music. Watch for more information here. I love holidays and hate to s...

Whitehall High School Student of the Week was Kenzie Cowling, a sophomore at Whitehall High School. Kenzie has a great...

As of Sunday Nov. 3, more than 395,00 Montana voters had submitted their ballots for the 2024 general election, according to the secretary of state. Others spent portions of their Monday casting their votes early at county election offices using a one-time absentee option. Even more will flock to the polls Tuesday to stand at a booth and fill in the bubbles next to their candidates of choice. How exactly do all those paper ballots transform into the official results flashed on television and computer screens come election night? The answer to t...
The Importance of Strong Passwords and How to Create Them In today's digital age, the importance of strong passwords cannot be overstated. With cyber threats on the rise, safeguarding our personal information has become more critical. A strong password is the first defense against unauthorized access to our online accounts, protecting everything from our bank details to our social media profiles. Weak passwords are like leaving your front door unlocked. Cybercriminals can easily exploit them to...
This is one of a series of articles focusing on estate and legacy planning. The authors are Kaleena Miller, Madison-Jefferson County Extension Agent, kaleena.miller1@montana.edu, and Marsha Goetting, MSU Extension Family Economics Specialist, marsha.goetting@montana.edu. An important goal for most Montana farm/ranch family enterprises is transferring land and business to the next generation. The process is challenging because it includes a complex web of economic, legal, and family decisions. “For some families, just the idea of getting s...
Fire season in Montana still has not ended. Thirty-five fires continue to burn across the state, though the combined acreage makes up a small amount of the total burned this season. A continued drought in the east will help maintain fire-prone conditions through early November, though Monday night brought precipitation and cooler temperatures to western Montana, according to Dan Zumpfe, a meteorologist based in Missoula for the National Weather Service. "Certainly for western Montana, it looks like we're going to be out of fire season, for the...
She was 28 years old and dealt with aplomb the hordes of picture-taking tourists and repeated motherhood. When she was killed by a car a few weeks ago, the loss of Grizzly 399 left people all over the world shocked and saddened. Grizzly 399 wasn't just another wild bear in northwestern Wyoming; she was a window into the secret lives of grizzlies. Over nearly three decades she raised 18 cubs amidst the millions of visitors and residents of Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park. Her death...
People think of sipping ice cream floats in the middle of summer when temperatures are soaring. Ice cream floating in a bubbling base of cola or root beer can be a welcome treat on a hot day. However, floats can be just as delicious when the weather chills, particularly when ice cream enhances rich and decadent hot chocolate. For this Hot Chocolate Float from Chocolate: Over 100 Temptingly-Tasty Dishes (Love Food) by the Love Food editors, coconut- and chocolate-flavored scoops of ice cream bob...
Georgia, I have a question, Last year I (16F) went prom dress shopping with my grandma (54F) and my mom (35F). I found a lovely dress, and they each paid for half. I was cleaning my room a few weeks ago when my grandma stopped by and mentioned how she would “love to try it on and borrow it for a weekend.” I laughed her comment off and again hung the dress in the back of my closet. Yesterday she asked if she could borrow the dress for a formal party this weekend. I said NO. She then went on a rant about how she paid for half of it and it...

I’m a staunch proponent of proper Biblical interpretation and application; holding such a position establishes a strong foundation for theology and life practice. Since Christ created the church with the first-century apostles and disciples, confusion or chaos wove into Christian circles as false teachers; this is why sound teaching is vital. Most importantly, we should understand that not every teaching available is from God, false teachers still exist (John 4:1-3). One area of debate over the past two decades has been what authority and power...
