  • Let's Redefine Those Bucket Lists

MARJORIE WOODRUFF, Writers on the Range|Oct 20, 2021

What did we learn this summer and fall? We learned that people who’d been cooped up, thanks to COVID-19, flocked to our national parks and forests. Once there, many were eager to empty their bucket list of must-do activities in the outdoors. Consequences ranged from overflowing parking lots, lots of litter and human waste and illegal pets on and off the trails, to campers parking anywhere they wanted, copious graffiti and calls for multiple rescues. At Grand Canyon alone, the summer rescue count exceeded all of last year’s. Visitation on pub...

  • Montana State Park of the Week Milltown State Park

    Oct 20, 2021

Granite Ghost Town State Park showcases remnants of this once thriving 1890s silver boomtown that bears stark witness to Montana's boom-and-bust mining history. Hector Horton first discovered silver in the general area in 1865. In the autumn of 1872, a prospector named Holland discovered the Granite Mine. Then it was relocated in 1875. The Granite Mine was the richest silver on earth, and if it wasn't for a delayed telegram, it might have never been discovered. The miner's backers thought the...

Reclamation is proud to manage Canyon Ferry’s public federal lands, that belong to the American people, and exist for the benefit of all. Staff members at Canyon Ferry are working hard to maintain these areas and make improvements for recreationists to continue to enjoy these resources for many years to come. With this season’s record-high use also came record-high misuse, particularly at Fish Hawk Campground located on West Shore Drive. Reclama...

Wildlife and enforcement staff from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and the Custer Gallatin National Forest’s Gardiner Ranger District met wi...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Hot Mulled (Sherried) Apple Cider

    Oct 20, 2021

When hosting friends and family at home, it's understandable that hosts direct so much of their focus to the foods they plan to serve. The main course is often the focal point and most memorable aspect of a dinner party, and that's true whether the get-together is a backyard barbecue, a holiday meal with the family or a formal affair with colleagues. Food might be a focal point, but guests also will need something to drink. Traditional spirits like wine and cocktails are the standard, but hosts...

  • Creating Fiction from History

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK, Whitehall Ledger|Oct 20, 2021

For many years, Frank and Harriet Jester had tried, God knows they had! In the late Spring of 1923, their patience was finally rewarded when little Charlotte Mae came into this world with hardly a peep. In fact, both Mother and Father would say that little Maisie was the best baby they'd ever had (ironic since she was their only child.) Frank and Harriet were from opposite ends of the country. Harriet a New Jersey lady, while Frank was born into one of the original gold rush families, out of...

  • Working to Protect Montanans from Democrats' Tax and Spend Spree

STEVE DAINES, United States Senator, Montana|Oct 20, 2021

Democrats, led by President Biden, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi, are rushing a reckless $3.5 trillion tax and spending spree bill through Congress that would reshape the very foundation of America and push the U.S. down the path of socialism. The Democrats’ massive bill is the largest spending bill in our nation’s history and will create all sorts of new entitlement programs. To pay for it, Democrats plan to hike taxes across the board, making this bill the largest tax increase in over 50 years. In fact, according to the Tax...

  • Congressional Districts Need to Reflect Competitiveness

    EVAN BARRETT, Montana Producer, Historian|Oct 20, 2021

When the Montana Districting and Apportionment Commission adopted criteria and goals for dividing Montana into two Congressional Districts it included a goal of considering competitiveness in its decision-making. That made sense, for history is very clear: Montana, over the years, has been competitive between the two major parties. It is easy to look at the most recent election results of 2020 and declare that Montana is not a competitive state politically. But a landslide of sorts in one election does not define the state permanently. Our...

  • Will Senator Tester Vote to Impose Critical Race Theory on Montana's Children?

SETH BERGLEE, Montana Representative, R-Joliet Chair, House Education Committee|Oct 20, 2021

Montanans overwhelmingly reject Critical Race Theory in our classrooms. Since Brown v. Board of Education, we’ve worked to live up to our founding ideals and we hold true to the principle of equal treatment for every student. President Biden’s controversial nominee to head the Department of Education’s extremely powerful Office for Civil Rights (OCR), Catherine Lhamon, instead wants to make sure every school in America implements and adheres to Marxist ideologies disguised as so-called antiracism teachings. Ms. Lhamon’s nomination stalled...

  • Guest opinion: Gianforte Appointments Favor Private Wildlife

TIM ROBERTS, Fort Benton, Montana Resident|Oct 20, 2021

Growing up in rural Utah, I had incredible public hunting opportunities just like so many in Montana have enjoyed for generations. I spent time with family and friends, pursuing mule deer and elk on both public and private lands in what were the defining moments of my upbringing. That all changed when a group called Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife took over my home state’s wildlife agency, and made hunting strictly something for the wealthy. The public gets the crumbs, reduced to a handful of licenses. Even worse, in many hunting areas the p...
