  • Council Meeting Gets Heated with Fire Chief

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Ledger|Mar 16, 2022

Tensions were high from the beginning of Fire Chief Joe Granvold’s report to the denial of his request for CIP funds at Monday’s March Whitehall Town Council Meeting. Granvold had requested about $5700 in CIP funds for new turn-outs for the volunteer fire department. When Council chair Roy McBride called in to question his over expenditures of budget, voices rose, with McBride noting that if the Town has to work within their budget, so does the Fire Department. McBride also requested a breakdown of how many of the fires services were rural fir...

  • Dear Editor: Western Legacy Center

    LEONARD WORTMAN|Mar 16, 2022

Dear Editor, It is difficult to respond to an anonymous letter writer. You don’t know if the person is truly a concerned citizen or someone that is just trying to stir the pot. I will try to take this opportunity to explain the Western Legacy Center concept, as briefly as possible. This project actually started as a rest area in Boulder after the State announced they were going to close the two rest areas at Jefferson City. The concept from the beginning has always been the same, get people to pull off the Interstate highways and get them i...

  • Dear Editor: Need for Crosswalk

    Charles Haddon Shank|Mar 16, 2022

Dear Editor, It has recently come to my attention, or rather awareness, that there is a need for a posted crosswalk across from the Town Pump, near the northern end of Whitehall Street. While at the Mint Bar the other night for Pool League, I bumped into an older trucker friend of mine from Canada who apprised me of this issue. He acknowledged that for younger (20s-40s) truckers who must fuel up at the diesel pumps on the east side of Whitehall Street, then run across a usually busy thoroughfare to pay their fuel bill, there is no big problem....

  • Thought Provokers: 3/16/2022

    Mar 16, 2022

Face tattoos are a sign of great financial security. Batman can only work at night because otherwise, Bruce Wayne would have tan lines on his face. It’s easier for most people to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. People who are 20 years old have lived 10% of their life through COVlD. Hot water heaters are really cold water heaters. At least one person you know was disappointed by how your voice sounded when you first started talking to them. If you own a nuclear bunker you’d need to stay within a 10-mile radius at all...

  • Deputy Fire Warden Urges All to be Wildfire Aware

PAT McKELVEY, Jefferson County Deputy Fire Warden|Mar 16, 2022

Many in Montana make their homes in woodland settings - in or near forests, rural areas, or other remote locations. There, homeowners enjoy the beauty of the environment but face the very real danger of wildfire. Wildfires can begin unnoticed and spread quickly, igniting brush, trees, and homes. With spring around the corner, now is the time to do your part and begin getting your home ready for wildfire season. Start by reviewing your home and property from the top down. Inspect your chimneys, which should be cleaned at least once a year. Addit...

  • Connecting Point: No Stone Left Unturned

    BILL LANES|Mar 16, 2022

Within the pages of the Bible, there are particular passages that leave us with questions. For the “brightest” and “best” scholars or the average Christian there is some common criteria used for proper Bible interpretation. Step one; understand the original author’s intent, context, and cultural background. Step two; understand the genre of Scripture; Narrative/Historical, Prophecy, Epistle, Wisdom, Poetry, and Apocalyptic. Step three; carefully determine the proper application. Many general principles taught by the original author can be br...

  • Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 3/16/2022

    RITA BROWN, Whitehall Ledger|Mar 16, 2022

At a meeting held March 6th in Whitehall, about a dozen Whitehall area residents met with county commissioners Leonard Wortman and Sam Samson to discuss the proposed county road ordinance. The meeting produced a fairly unified position among those in attendance that county roads should be better signed, that signs and enforcement should be prioritized based on risk and danger, that site-specific speed limits are better than a countywide 35 MPH limit, and that on many roads in the county many people currently drive too fast for road conditions....

  • Creating Fiction from History: 3/16/2022

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Mar 16, 2022

John Schmitt was the newest member of the greatest rival to Al Capone’s organization, the O’Banion gang. Ole Gimpy himself had recruited him, so John Jacob, JJ for short, was feeling pretty good about his new position. The pay was pretty decent, though the work in Goose Island could get rather dicey at times. In fact, dicey was pretty much a daily occurrence for this third-generation Swede. JJ was fresh out of the German military and had seen much action in what is now known as the First World War. Though his Homeland had officially taken a mor...

  • Op-Ed Freedom's Best Friend: Armed Citizens

ROGER KOOPMAN, Former Montana Public Service Commissioner and Montana Legislator|Mar 16, 2022

So far, the obvious has eluded us. There’s a critical lesson to be learned from the tragic bloodbath that was once the peaceful cities, hillsides and farmlands of Ukraine. TV commentators are bent on characterizing Ukraine as a democratic and free country. Yet if that were true, Russia would have never invaded. To do so would have been military suicide. They would have faced a citizenry that is not only heroic and courageous, but a citizenry that bears arms and knows how to use them. A free nation does not fear its citizens. A free g...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Cowboy Cookies

    Mar 16, 2022

Pecans are tasty offerings that are ideal in both savory dishes and desserts. Like fruits of other members of the hickory genus of trees, pecans are not truly nuts, but drupes. A drupe is a fruit with a single stone or pit surrounded by a husk. With pecans, the outer husk dries out and splits open, exposing the "nuts" inside. Georgia, New Mexico and Texas are the leading domestic producers of pecans, but Mexico grows nearly half of the world's pecans. Pecans are heart-healthy and rich in...
