  • Stories of a Day Never to Be Forgotten: 9/11/2001

    Sep 11, 2024

September 11 marks another anniversary of our nation's worst terrorist attack - the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. For months following September 11, 2001, people came together to grieve family, friends, and strangers. More than 20 years later, we still do. Sometimes called "Patriots Day" or "Day of Remembrance," September 11 has become an annual day for many Americans to remember, reflect, honor, and mourn. We should never forget this day, but many of us have never shared...

  • Dear Editor: We are Saddened the Matter has Come to This Juncture

WHITEHALL TOWN COUNCIL and MAYOR HENSLEIGH, Town of Whitehall|Sep 11, 2024

Dear Editor, As members of the Whitehall Town Council and Mayor Mary Janacaro Hensleigh, we are saddened that the matter with the Whitehall Saddle Club has reached this juncture. It's our view that the Whitehall Saddle Club, over many decades, has put time and great effort into making the rodeo arena better; we appreciate those endeavors and their volunteers hosting events. However, we believe the grants and donations for the Rec Facility procured by the Whitehall Saddle Club were always...

  • Dear Editor: Change is Coming to Our Little Town

    CHARLES HADDON SHANK|Sep 11, 2024

Dear Editor, Yes, I'm harping on the shop local thing again! Before I get too far though, I must admit that I DO shop at Walmart once a month. The reason? The local grocery store does not accept my Humana Healthy Benefits card and Walmart does. This is not the ONLY reason, though it IS the MAIN reason. One thing many may not consider concerning the slightly higher prices local merchants charge is their own overhead. For instance, the asking price for whatever given item may be somewhat lower,...

  • Dear Editor: Endorsing Nancy Jane Lien

    LAWRENCE PETTIT|Sep 11, 2024

Dear Editor, I am pleased to endorse Nancy Jane Lien for Montana House District 75. Nancy Jane was a Political Science honors student when I was a Professor at Montana State. She served as an intern at Montana's Constitutional Convention. I have followed Nancy's career in business and public service, and know her super powers are customer service and mediation, skills she will bring to representing all the people of Jefferson County. As a Montana farm girl Nancy understands the value of...

  • Thought Provokers: 9/11/2024

    Sep 11, 2024

There are only 11 days a month where you can switch the day and month by mistake. You’re the most predictable person you know. You can make more people laugh with one comment online than you do your whole in-person life. Freedom is free. Taking someone else’s freedom requires energy and resources. Alphabet books never prepared me for how little quince I would encounter growing up. And unless your career is music-oriented, your window for xylophones probably ended in kindergarten. The “best movies of all time” discussions are usually dominat...

  • Op Ed: The Republican Party Platform

    DON LEPINSKY|Sep 11, 2024

Has anyone had a chance to read the Republican Party platform? Its policies are mostly a collection of vague talking points out of touch with reality. Anyone who has read this document and is capable of analytical thought has probably come to a conclusion similar to mine: that this manifesto, as a whole, is an unmitigated disaster waiting to happen. What is distressing is not what it contains but what is missing. First, let me briefly critique a few issues mentioned in the platform. The platform has a lot of feel-good talking points on...

  • Ledger Looking Back 25 Years: 9/8/1999

    RITA BROWN, Whitehall Ledger|Sep 11, 2024

9/08/1999 Another Whitehall business was burglarized over the Labor Day weekend - making three downtown business burglaries in just over a month - although police officials say the third burglary appears unrelated to the first two. The Mint Bar was burglarized sometime after the bar closed Sunday, Sept. 5, and before 9:30 AM on Monday, and Whitehall police and the bar manager both say the job looked like the work of experienced burglars. Two other businesses - Janlyn's Styling Salon and the Two...

    Sep 11, 2024

Whitehall Medical Clinic is launching a wellness and weight management program—an excellent opportunity to lose weight through healthy means. While the clinic continues to offer wellness exams, bloodwork, EKGs, and x-rays when appropriate, it now has several options to help patients manage their weight and feel better about their health. The most recent addition to their services is a group of medicines in the family of GLP-1 (glucose like peptid) agonist. These medications mimic the GLP-1 hormone our bodies make naturally. While this family o...

  • Whitehall Garden Club News: September

    JAYNE DEAN, Whitehall Garden Club|Sep 11, 2024

As summer is closing, the Whitehall Garden Club keeps blooming with another tremendously delicious, hilarious, and informative meeting. Janet Chapman, Janet Finney, and Kay Fisher created the most delicious breakfast imaginable! The freshly sliced cantaloupe was the perfect addition to this scrumptious brunch. Thank...

  • Between the Stacks: 9/11/2024

    JEANNIE FERRISS, Whitehall Community Library|Sep 11, 2024

After what seems like forever, though it has not really been that long, the Whitehall Community Library is getting a new copier, fax machine, and scanner all rolled into one! You will probably hear the library staff cheering all over town when it arrives; until then, we can scan, fax, or make copies at the library, but only in small quantities. If you have art-oriented children, this week's Art Camp p...

KALEENA MILLER and MARSHA GOETTING, MSU Extension|Sep 11, 2024

When a person dies, the answers to the following questions will help a financial entity decide who is entitled to the funds in the account: • Was the account jointly owned by the decedent with others, and if so, what are their names? • Did the joint account say right of survivorship or without right of survivorship on the form? • Did the joint account have a payable on death (POD) beneficiary designation or transfer on death (TOD) beneficiary registration? • If the decedent was the sole owner, did they make a payable on death (POD) benefic...

  • 40 Years of Living with Wolves

BEN LONG, Writers on the Range|Sep 11, 2024

Biologist Diane K. Boyd has had a front-row seat to 40 years of wolf recovery in the West, but her new memoir reveals that entanglements with humans in Montana were often tougher than dealing with the four-legged predators. There's a proud literary canon of women telling their stories of studying wildlife in remote places-Mardy Murie in Alaska, Jane Goodall in Tanzania, Dian Fossey in Rwanda. Now, Boyd's memoir, A Woman Among Wolves-My Journey Through Forty Years of Wolf Recovery, runs in that...

  • RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Coconut Chicken Curry

    Sep 11, 2024

The word "curry" is used to describe a variety of things. First it is a mix of spices that often combines coriander seeds, turmeric, cumin, chili peppers, fenugreek, clove, mustard, and even nutmeg or ginger. This produces a warm and robust spicy taste that can flavor various foods. Curry also is used to describe a specific dish. Curry is a recipe made with a sauce or gravy seasoned with spices (like those in a curry mix) and is traditionally associated with south Asian cuisine. Curry also is a...

  • Just Ask Georgia: 9/11/2024

    GEORGIA|Sep 11, 2024

Georgia, I have a question, My boyfriend (25) won’t let me (20) get face tattoos. I don’t want a big face tattoo, just a half mandala on my temple or a little heart below my eye or something. I don’t think it’s a big deal, but he says he “can’t bring a girlfriend with face tattoos to work events." He’s in law school and going to be a lawyer. I’m a hairstylist, and it’s 2024, and I don’t think anyone cares about tattoos anymore. I feel like it’s my body and my choice, but he said I won't do it if I like waking up next to him. It IS a face tat...
