  • Are the Rumors True? NO - This was NOT the Last of Frontier Days

ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall Chamber of Commerce|Jul 31, 2024

Ah, Whitehall’s rumor mill. It is a wonder. However, the latest rumor churning through town is not true, and I can confirm that. In April 2024, at the monthly Whitehall Chamber of Commerce meeting, it was discussed that the Chamber had become an event planning company for Whitehall and was not meeting its mission. A Chamber of Commerce should provide resources to local businesses, push Shop Local campaigns, find grants for local businesses and entities, and promote local events. The Chamber has led almost all of Whitehall’s events, running the...

  • No Update From Saddle Club as Lease Expires

    ELIZABETH PULLMAN, Whitehall LEdger|Jul 31, 2024

At the Monday, July 29th meeting of the Whitehall Recreation Board, held at the Town Hall, there were no new updates from the Whitehall Saddle Club (WSC) regarding the lease of their property to the Town and whether or not the property will remain on the Rodeo Grounds indefinitely. The lease between the WSC and Town for the equipment expires at the end of July. During legal discussions, it was concluded by both entities' legal representation that the WSC owns the property not permanently affixed to the ground at the Rec Complex’s Rodeo G...

  • Op Ed: The Credit Card Competition Act Threatens Montana's Tourism Industry

SENATOR MARK NOLAND, Senate District 5 in Flathead|Jul 31, 2024

We call Montana “The Last Best Place” for good reason. Millions of visitors come to share in our state’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant communities each year, supporting nearly 50,000 Montana jobs and bringing at least $5 billion to our state annually, according to a study by the University of Montana. This revenue fueled our post-pandemic recovery, providing a lifeline to our hotels, local restaurants, and countless small businesses. I know how crucial these visitors are to our state’s economic health. Many tourists can afford trips t...

  • Dear Editor: MT Must Have Judges Who Put Political Leanings Aside

MATT REGIER, Speaker of the Montana House of Representatives|Jul 31, 2024

Dear Editor, Two weeks ago, a former president and leading political candidate was nearly assassinated. For a brief moment, political pundits, television hosts, and celebrities retracted their baseless claims that President Trump was a modern-day Hitler and wished him well, ultimately confessing their accusations were manufactured, designed only to instill fear to get votes. Unfortunately, they have since returned to their aggressive and unfounded rhetoric in their desire to win this historic race. Montanans usually remain uninfluenced by...

  • Thought Provokers: 7/31/2024

    Jul 31, 2024

It’s impossible to always experience higher than normal call volumes. Removing episodes of TV shows deemed “inappropriate” or “offensive” will result in a new version of the Mandela effect. People have gotten crueler, not kinder, since the pandemic. Cashiers at liquor stores could more accurately diagnose alcoholism in a person than their doctor could. Most Americans who work in India make more than most Indians ever will, and most Indians who work in America make more than most Americans ever will. The unofficial accepted minimum speed for...

  • Jefferson County Preventionist: What Works in Prevention?

BARB REITER, Jefferson County SWMT Prevention|Jul 31, 2024

As I explained in a previous article the science of prevention has grown through research and study over the past 50 years. It naturally follows that the approaches, materials and programs have also changed. In this article I will explain more about social-emotional learning, known as SEL, as part of that change process. Schools presently use evidenced-based programs which provide a good foundation for SEL development. Social, emotional, and behavioral learning focuses on developing skills to...

  • Learn About Whitehall Bio Control: 7/31/2024

TODD BREITENFELDT, Whitehall Biological Control Project|Jul 31, 2024

It's Cypho Season! The Whitehall Project is soon going to start collecting spotted knapweed root boring weevils (Cyphocleonus achates). These weevils are starting to emerge from the roots as collectable adults. This is a bit earlier than usual because of the hot weather we have been having. Spotted knapweed is a short-lived perennial plant with a tap root. If you hand pull it and get most of the root you will kill it. Wear gloves and a long-sleeved shirt when pulling knapweed. Always bag and dis...

  • Between the Stacks: 7/31/2024

    JEANNIE FERRISS, Whitehall Community Library|Jul 31, 2024

There will also be no Tuesday painting class during the month. Joan Dedeyker, our resident artist, plans to offer another class in January for those who want to join. You may have noticed many new people helping out in the Library. With all of the programs going on and our circulation statistics going higher every year, our volunteers...

    Jul 31, 2024

A quick and easy salad can be the perfect ending to a long summer's day. Delicious and light, there's not much fuss that goes into preparing salad, and making one typically does not require turning on the oven, which is ideal when the weather is steamy. With already-cooked chicken and a dressing that can be made up to one day ahead, this Chicken Salad Niçoise is easy to assemble. Suggested pairings include a chilled soup, like Gazpacho, crusty bread, and a light dessert of fresh fruit topped...

  • CONNECTING POINT: What Hinders You?

    BILL LANES|Jul 31, 2024

The Bible portrays Christian life as a long-distance race, and sprinting is a poor example due to its short time span. It seems to me that in the 80s, many of my proteges looked to sprinters as the “jocks,” but I recall that notion changing as long-distance runners started breaking the four-minute mile. Any long or short-distance, dedicated runner who trains hard is an amazing athlete. Soon, the Olympics will have our attention as records are shattered and the competition is formidable. Because God intends the Christian’s journey to be a life...
