  • Keep Bird Feeders Clean or Put Them Away for the Summer

    Jun 30, 2021

To prevent the spread of disease, such as salmonella, bird enthusiasts should consider either removing their bird feeders for the summer or cleaning the feeder regularly. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has received several phone calls recently about dead birds around feeders and birds with crusty eyes. Birds don’t need supplementary food in the summer. They typically eat naturally occurring food, such as insects, during this time of year when they are nesting and rearing their young. If you suspect that you are seeing sick birds, or find d...

    Jun 30, 2021

As a part of his years long fight to increase local meat processing capacity in Montana and reduce consolidation in the meatpacking industry, U.S. Senator Jon Tester has secured $55.2 million in competitive grand funding that will provide critical resources for currently operating processing facilities that are working toward Federal inspection. “In order to break the stranglehold that large packers have on the marketplace, we have to bolster local processing capacity and increase competition—that’s exactly what these dollars will do,” said Tes...

State officials said today the alarming increase of fentanyl-related fatalities in Montana that occurred in 2020 does not appear to be slowing down thus far into 2021. The Montana Department of Justice’s State Crime Lab reported 41 fentanyl-related deaths in 2020, up from 19 in 2019. Through May 2021, there’s already been 22 total confirmed fentanyl-related fatalities, including 11 statewide in April alone. “This latest trend is extremely concerning and adds to the already existing deadly and costly impact illegal drugs have in Montana commu...

Get barbecue ready with "Competition-Style Pulled Pork" from "BBQ Revolution" (Quarto Publishing Group) by Mitch...

  • How To Love The Bear's World

John Horning, Writers on the Range|Jun 30, 2021

Last spring, at the height of some of the most anxiety-ridden moments of the pandemic, my father read a poem to me over the phone. He’s 89 this year, and while he’s vibrant and healthy I don’t take for granted any opportunity to hear his voice — especially when he’s reciting a poem. The poem, Mary Oliver’s Spring, describes the emergence of a black bear from its winter slumber. Oliver writes: “There is only one question: how to love this world.” This spring, as bruins emerged across the American West, I found myself wondering about the secre...

  • Legislature Backed Commercialization of Public Wildlife

    Tom Puchlerz, Montana Wildlife Federation|Jun 30, 2021

I like so many Montana hunters have been blessed to enjoy a lifetime of world-class hunting and fishing. It’s why so many of us live here, and it speaks to the decades of work that Montanans have put into conserving and managing our public wildlife for the benefit of everyone. But after this legislative session it is clear that Montana is on a different path, one that disregards science and places the ability for some to profit off of our wildlife as the highest priority. As we have seen in other states this will mean less opportunity for p...

  • This Week's "Change That Up" Tip...The 80/20 Principle

    Jun 30, 2021

Have you ever heard of the 80/20 principle, also known as the Pareto principle? It’s considered a foundational concept for life, business, time, and wealth management, and it essentially states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects (i.e., outcomes) come from 20% of the causes (i.e., inputs). In other words, 20% of your activities will account for 80% of your results. When it comes to nutrition, however, the 80/20 rule takes on a slightly different meaning. More specifically, for most people, it means that 80% of the time you s...
